New award recognises ADBE’s commitment to gender equality
The School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment (ADBE) is proud to be recognised for its commitment to gender equality by achieving Bronze Award under the Athena SWAN Charter.

The Athena SWAN charter, managed by Advance HE, was established in 2005 and is used internationally to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment. The Charter is used across the globe to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.
The awarding panel recognised and commended the School’s future plans to address gender imbalances and to seek consultancy with relevant professional bodies to gauge industry developments and opportunities in regards to equality and diversity.
To obtain the award, the School had to produce a four-year action plan to improve gender balance.
Responding to the news Andrew Knight, Executive Dean said:
I am delighted that the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment has been awarded the Athena Swan Bronze Award. Colleagues in the School have worked hard to understand the issues surrounding gender equality in preparation for the submission. As part of a continuing cultural shift, we look forward to moving forward with the agenda in accordance with our new action plan. Congratulations to all those involved.
