Brothers highlight how NTU's courses provide flexible routes into the construction sector

Two members of the same family – one a graduate and the other in the process of completing their studies – are both forging successful careers in the building industry.

Paddy and Cian Webb

Paddy Webb (BSc Honours Construction Management) joined Nottingham-headquartered Clegg Construction – a firm specialising in the delivery of public and private sector projects – as a management trainee five years ago.

Currently working in Derby as a site manager on a new care home construction project, Paddy’s career has already involved managing a portfolio of high-end projects, including an instrumental role in the delivery of the design and build of NTU’s RIBA award-winning Lyth Building.

Cian Webb joined the same construction company three years ago after completing A-levels and is now an assistant bid manager. Like his older brother Paddy, Cian is also studying towards a BSc Honours in Construction Management and has recently passed the third year of his five-year course.

Paddy and Cian’s employers have funded both of their part-time university degrees – allowing them to study and earn at the same time.

Paddy said: “No two days are the same. I meet different people; I face different situations and I am involved in multiple developments. I’m currently managing a housing project, which will deliver 13 homes. My role involves its day-to-day management, record keeping, monitoring sub-contractors, quality management, client liaison, and much more.”

Cian commented: “It’s exciting seeing a project take shape, from tender stage to contract award, through to its practical completion.”

Both brothers believe that communication, a strong understanding of business processes, and attention to detail, are the three top skills necessary for bid management. These are all attributes Paddy and Cian have gained during their studies at NTU and are highly valued by Clegg Construction.
