My alumni story: from compositor to counsellor – meet Jeff Buck
"I’m an NTU alum by virtue of attending the old Trent Polytechnic in the 70’s. I was an apprentice compositor at the Nottingham Evening Post, so studied on day release for my City and Guilds Basic and Advanced Craft Certificates in Compositor's Work.
"I loved the course and was named Best Composing Student in 1973, 1974, and 1975. In 1977 (my final year) I was Student of the Year for the whole printing department.
"I returned to Trent Poly to study for my Institution of Industrial Managers Certificate in Management, which I gained in 1980.
"I left the Post in 1992 and worked in partnership development and project management in Nottingham within the area of urban generation, first on the Broxtowe Estate and then in Radford and Hyson Green. I took early retirement in 2008 and became interested in men’s role in the fight against domestic abuse and violence against women and girls.
"For the past six years, I’ve worked as a freelance facilitator delivering healthy relationship and domestic abuse education in Nottinghamshire schools, mainly for the local domestic abuse charity, Equation. I also work alongside Broxtowe Women’s Project, am a White Ribbon ambassador, and have designed and delivered specific programmes around domestic abuse for schools.
"I’ve come a long way from my NTU days, via being a training manager, urban regeneration project manager, and Childline counsellor to – at the age of 68 – talking to kids about healthy relationships, and groups of men about why reducing violence against women needs them to get involved."
