My alumni story: Cameron's studies quickly lead to career success

It's always great to hear from our alumni – especially those who only graduated recently but already finding their studies are paying dividends.

Journalism Graduate Cameron Rutherford celebrates his graduation wearing a gap and gown.

One such person to make contact with us was Cameron Rutherford. Having graduated with a BA (Hons) in Journalism in 2022, he was keen to share what happened next.

“Not long after graduating, I landed a role as a trainee with a large UK publishing company.

"I became a multimedia reporter for HertsLive – a regional website covering news across the county of Hertfordshire. I produced over 1,800 stories during that time, progressing from being a trainee to main reporter.

“My standout memory during my time at NTU? This has to be how exciting and hands-on the course was. Journalism is a very competitive industry. The more prepared you are, the better. We learned things like editing audio and video, photography, and how to interview people. These all helped me land a good job after graduation.

“In this day and age, you have to be an all-rounder. That’s why I enjoyed the practical focus of my degree. Our two 'news weeks' – which take place during the third and final year of the course – combined everything we’d learned. It prepared us to produce high-quality journalism.

“I’ll always remember learning shorthand, which is a prerequisite for professional reporters. It was also a necessary skill required to gain my NCTJ Diploma in Journalism. Overall, my course gave me the confidence to go out and do the job!

“The most rewarding story I’ve covered so far? Without a doubt the one involving a young boy who was sadly very badly injured while on holiday. We were taught on my course to think like a journalist and keep an eye on everything happening locally. I learned that the young boy’s predicament had generated a lot of concern and sympathy in the local community. The story went on to attract interest from the national press and highlight his plight. So far, it has been one of the most gratifying experiences I’ve had as a journalist.

“As for the future, I’d like to transition over to a career in communications and public relations, as so many of the skills I’ve gained – both on my course and in the workplace – will be very useful.”
