The Project

Gasworks Junction is a vibrant urban entertainment centre in Northampton's town centre, designed to attract visitors and contribute to the area’s regeneration. It offers activities for all ages, including mini golf, a food court, soft play, and laser tag, creating a lively social hub.

The project places a strong emphasis on sustainability, incorporating eco-friendly design elements, energy-efficient systems, and sustainable materials. With its central location, Gasworks Junction aims to boost foot traffic, support local businesses, and provide a dynamic space for the community to enjoy.

To celebrate the area's heritage a glass walkway links a preserved building to the new entertainment centre.

The inspiration behind the project

Jessica's design is inspired by the site's history as a gasworks from the 1800s, particularly the gasholders that once stood there. Their industrial forms have influenced the structure, blending heritage with a modern feel. An existing building has been preserved and linked with a glass walkway, creating a visual connection between past and present. This approach celebrates the site's legacy while giving it an exciting new purpose as a vibrant entertainment hub.

The project experience

Jessica says that working on this project has been challenging and busy, but also incredibly rewarding and educational. "I’ve learned new skills while building on existing ones, bringing everything together to create a project I’m truly passionate about. It has been a great experience in problem-solving, design, and planning, preparing me for future projects and professional work."

Being part of NTU

Jessica says: "My time at NTU has been both challenging and rewarding, helping me develop skills in design, problem-solving, and project management. I’ve learned to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and collaborate with others, building strong connections along the way. The experience has given me the confidence and knowledge to take on future projects with enthusiasm."

During her time on the course, Jessica was also able to go on a field trip to Glasgow, which gave her an opportunity to explore a new city and bond with my peers outside of class.

While her whole NTU experience has been enjoyable, Jessica considers the final year to be the standout. "It’s fulfilling to apply all the knowledge and skills I’ve gained into my final project," she explains, "bringing everything together in a meaningful way."

She says: "Overall, my NTU experience has been unforgettable, and I’m grateful for all the moments that shaped my journey."

Closing remarks

Jessica has the following advice for prospective Architectural Technology students:

"If you’re thinking about studying my course at NTU, go for it! Make the most of the amazing resources, engage with your lecturers, and get stuck into student life. Stay organised, say yes to new opportunities, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. It’s a fantastic experience!"
