Bike hire FAQs
Who can hire a bike?
Any current NTU student or staff member. Full-time, part time, undergraduate or postgraduate. Everyone.
Do I need insurance?
It's up to you. Most bike insurance costs upwards of £30/year and charge an excess of up to £100 when you claim. As your deposit is much less than this, you may not think it worthwhile to insure your bike separately. However if you are able to add your bike to home contents insurance then it may not cost you any extra, and could save your deposit should the bike be stolen.
Where do I get my bike?
From the the Bike Factory workshop at the City Students' Union. If you're based at Clifton or Brackenhurst and you hire your bike during welcome week then we can bring your bike to your campus in the first few weeks of term.
I've not ridden a bike for years! Can I get some training?
Yes, and it's all free. We've partnered up with Ridewise, a local training provider, who can help you to be confident and safe on the road. Ask us when you collect your bike for more information.
How should I look after my hire bike?
You are responsible for the appropriate maintenance of your hire bike. You will lose some or all of your deposit if your bike is not returned in a suitable state. Help is at hand though, and you can always contact us or attend one of the free maintenance sessions that will be be advertised on our events page.
What happens if my hire bike gets stolen?
All our hire bikes are provided with good quality D-locks as apart of the package. If you use it sensibly and make the most of our secure cycle parking, then your bike is unlikely to be stolen. If it is, then as long as your inform us of the theft promptly with a police incident number then you will only lose your deposit.

Use of NTU cycle storage facilities
Students and staff using any of the cycle stores located on NTU property should make themselves aware of the usage policies below. We want people to be able to cycle freely across the whole NTU estate, while taking into consideration the safety of other people that may be using shared spaces.
