Year Two Animation (BA Hons)
About Animation Studies:
Each year NTU students in year 2 of the Animation degree course embark on a short project called “Live Brief”. In small groups Animation students work with partners in the community such as NHS and Nottingham Playhouse to create vibrant short (approximately 2 minute) “infotainment” films to promote their client’s institution or convey a particular message.
The project is an exciting opportunity for the students to harness their creative skills and collaborate with clients in the community to meet their needs. By the end of the project, clients will be in receipt of a short film which is theirs to screen in house on the web or social media.
Project Details:
Our Animation students have worked with clients including Emmanuel House, Nottingham Playhouse and Save the Children. Most recently, an NHS informational animation was used professionally in conference, resulting in students interviewed on TV and a Mencap film received exposure on local BBC news.
The content and style of the films are determined by the client. If you’d like to be a client, you present a small team of 5 students with a Brief of what you’d like to see. Occasional brief meetings can be arranged online at your convenience to guide the students towards realising their vision.
Please bear in mind that as animation takes a long time to produce the films should be kept short, but the students will aim to work with you to make them as effective as possible.
Examples of previous projects:
You can find some great films from past projects in this online folder. They demonstrate the creativity and skill of our students in making compelling visual stories for both local and national Third Sector organisations.
Indicative timeline and what’s involved:
April – September 2024 – Complete the Community Engaged Learning Project Proposal Form. A member of the Community Engagement and Volunteering Team can support you with this.
September 2024 – Attend a Project Co-creation Workshop held at NTU. This will allow you to spend time with Academic Teams to fine-tune your project proposals ready to introduce to students.
End of November 2024 - Students will be introduced to project options – It would be fantastic if you were able to come onto Campus (City) and introduce your project to our students. We do understand that time is tight, so if you are unable to attend in person, we could either facilitate this session as a Teams call, or you could pre-record a short introductory video; again, we can support you with this!
November to January 2025 – Meet with the students, academic staff and the Community Engagement and Volunteering Team throughout the project (approx. once a week) to ensure all is going to plan.
The project concludes by the end of January. Our clients usually offer the team their informal feedback.
