Where have you volunteered/do you volunteer?

My first introduction to volunteering was in the early '90s when I helped my mum, who was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels! We cooked and delivered weekly meals to isolated older people. I loved spending time with them and getting to know their stories, which sparked my passion for connecting with community members I might not have met otherwise.

Since then, I have been fortunate enough to volunteer in many different places and roles. Whilst at University I supported out of school therapeutic play sessions, skills I later used when I took a group of NTU students to volunteer at a summer school for children with additional needs in Romania.

I have also supported Breakfast Clubs and Right to Read schemes in local schools, I volunteer as a Breastfeeding Buddy after struggling myself post-birth, and most recently, I sit on the voluntary EDI committee at my daughters' school.

Why did you want to volunteer? / Why is it important to you?

I have a genuine love for people, learning about their cultures, interests, and passions. I love seeing relationships grow and believe in the importance of learning from one another and standing up for what is right. Volunteering isn't a one-way street; it's a fantastic way to learn and grow from others while sharing your own strengths.

What impact has volunteering had on you? / How has volunteering helped you?

Volunteering has enabled my career!

I have worked in student volunteering for nearly 20 years, working with an amazing team to support thousands of students to integrate into the local community, and working with hundreds of community organisations over the years.

It has allowed me to travel the world and meet people and communities I would never have had the privilege to otherwise. Through volunteering, I have already gained many skills; my latest role involves public speaking, which is NOT my strength, but I am looking forward to embracing the opportunity and learning some more!
