Our mission

An overview of The Student Success Endowment and its ambitious vision.

What is the Student Success Endowment?

Students laughing on star backdrop

The University has invested £10,000,000 in capital to establish The Student Success Endowment and the aim is to match this amount through fundraising.

The Student Success Endowment is an income-generating investment that will channel all the dividends it accrues into an Opportunity Fund, which in turn will fund defining opportunities for students from low-income backgrounds.

Endowments are particularly meaningful as they offer a dependable, perpetual source of funding. They are not uncommon in UK universities and have been used for centuries to enhance the facilities of, and experiences within, many long-established institutions.

However, these are not the universities doing the heavy lifting when it comes to accelerating social mobility. This falls to organisations such as ours, which rarely have such endowment funds.

How does the Student Success Endowment work?

Accruals from The Student Success Endowment will be packaged into annual Opportunity Bursaries that are designed to enable students to access a range of extra-curricular activities, strongly correlated with improved student outcomes. It will allow them to say yes to opportunities, to expand their horizons, and to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with each and every one of their peers.

Eligible students (typically those from households with a combined income below £27,500) will automatically be awarded the bursary – current funding will allow each bursary to be worth £165 in the 2023/24 academic year. As the overall amount in The Student Success Endowment grows, so does the level of support we are able to provide. The table below demonstrates the impact our fundraising totals will could have on the bursaries offered.

We need the help of our community

We have an initial fundraising goal of £10,000,000 to increase the endowment to £20,000,000 through philanthropy – that’s where we are asking you to consider pledging your support. We have already received several six-figure commitments, however we still have a long way to go.

The more we raise, the bigger difference we can make to the lives of the next generation, and the better and brighter start we can give them as they embark on their own journeys.
