Introduction:

This course will guide you through selecting and using appropriate heritage materials in the repair, care, maintenance and upgrading of heritage buildings and assets.

It’s useful for anyone in the construction sector who’s looking to gain a better understanding of the challenges posed by listed, historic and older buildings.

What you’ll study

This course will introduce you to the legal framework in place in the UK to ensure that repairs are appropriate and proportionate, meeting the requirements of the local authority and Historic England.

You’ll look at how to apply retrofit technologies to meet the climate change challenged of the future without compromising the heritage aesthetic and character of our cities, towns and villages.

It will enable you to increase your level of project engagement and productivity.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • understand the main legal and practical constraints controlling works on historic buildings
  • be able to make informed decisions for selecting the most appropriate advice on the sympathetic maintenance, repair, conversion, conservation and retrofitting
  • have designed and specified appropriate upgrades to vernacular property, including choices for retrofit and enhancing energy performance
  • be confident in identifying differences in heritage construction techniques and materials
  • be able to interact effectively with both the owners of heritage buildings and those involved in carrying out the work
  • be able to demonstrate a range of transferable skills that be will valuable in the workplace.

Further information on what you'll study

A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

Should the assessment be successfully completed, the course provides 5 NTU undergraduate credits.

How you’re taught

Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of workshops, demonstrations, seminar groups and tutorials.

Entry requirements

This course is taught at 'Level 4' which is equivalent to first year of an undergraduate degree course.

For this course you should have:

  • A level grade 3 or above is desirable in a subject linked to the construction sector, or previous experience in the sector.
  • GCSE maths or international equivalent – minimum grade 4 / C or above.
  • GCSE English or international equivalent – minimum grade 4 / C or above.
