Introduction:

On this practical course, you’ll learn the three most important skills in making womenswear: how to cut a pattern, how to use a sewing machine and how to make adjustments to a pattern.

It’s ideal if you are new to making clothes and want to learn either for personal projects or to add work to a portfolio.

  • You’ll be part of a design community in our creative studio culture; one that promotes discussion and collaboration, and encourages experimentation and the constant swapping of ideas.
  • With a limited class size you'll have the one-to-one attention you need to ensure you leave with the skills to continue developing your portfolio.
  • Benefit from learning with an experienced tutor who has established links to the profession and significant experience working in varied practices.
  • On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance.

Doing your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award?

This course can count as your Gold DofE Residential.

DofE participants must book both the course and accommodation on campus for this to count towards your Gold Award.

Here's what our previous attendees have said:

'I wanted to do this course to improve my textile skills, and have learnt different sewing techniques, pattern making skills and strategical pinning. I enjoyed using the sewing machine, and Leann was so kind, I really enjoyed it all'

'I liked seeing my garment all come together. I've taken away lots of information and transferable skills for other projects'.

'I wanted to learn how to follow a pattern and the correct skills needed to go along with it. I wanted to feel confident enough to be able to make my own garments when I got home, and I have learnt that making a garment from scratch takes longer than you might expect! I really enjoyed our trip to the fabric shop and learning about all the different choices of fabric, how they draped and whether they would be easy to work with.'

'I was looking to improve my skills and understand patterns and wanted to complete my Duke Of Edinburgh Gold Residential Award, and really enjoyed being taught the proper way to do things. I now understand the way to construct a garment and know the names of the stiches!'

'I enjoyed the practical, sewing parts of the course the most, and have a better understanding of sewing techniques and a stronger knowledge of how to construct garments'

'I learned new skills and perfected the ones I already had. I enjoyed picking out the fabric and the fact that we had the opportunity to make a dress for ourselves'

'I wanted to do this course to see if I'd like to study fashion design at university - I definitely do want to do fashion design at university now, and now I know how to adapt patterns and have improved my sewing skills too.'

'I met lots of new people and did lots of practical exercises putting together a dress from scratch. I've got lots of new knowledge, improved my sewing skills and have an insight into what degree level fashion and textiles courses will be like'.

'Loved the course - I developed my sewing skills, learnt different sewing / assembling / hemming finishes and enjoyed getting on the machines'

What you’ll study

On this course, you will learn how to:

  • read a pattern and understand the terminology
  • take measurements correctly
  • mark fabric, pin and cut with accuracy
  • thread a sewing machine and over-locker, and use the correct stitches
  • choose the right fabric for a garment (a trip to a fabric store will be included)
  • complete a dress fitting
  • make pattern-adjustments, such as adding and adjusting darts and the different types of seams and finishes.

Having hand-sewing or machine-sewing experience before the course is useful, but not essential.

Further information on what you'll study

By the end of the course, you will have marked, cut and assembled a dress in your chosen fabric.

If you are feeling particularly brave, you may have made a start on a second project.

You will also have technical notes to help you continue making fashion in the future, and photographs of your work in progress for your portfolio.

You'll have real hands-on experience of what it's like to be a fashion student at university.

Social events

We appoint NTU Student Ambassadors who host social events on Monday and Wednesday evening to help you make friends across the whole of our summer school programme for 15 – 17 year olds, which are free to attend.
