Introduction:

Course dates:

11 - 15 August 2025, Monday to Friday 10 am - 4 pm

Immerse yourself in the rhythmic art of hand weaving and unleash your creativity.

Whether you’re a total beginner or an experienced weaver looking for a refresh, this summer school will teach you how to design, craft, and create beautiful handwoven fabric on a state-of-the-art ARM Touch 60 Loom.

From threading your warp to weaving intricate patterns, you’ll experiment with texture, colour, and yarn to bring your ideas to life.

Get hands-on with vibrant fibres, discover the magic of the loom, and craft a tactile masterpiece for interiors, fashion, or even textile art.

This course is your chance to learn how to weave with like-minded people whilst creating a stunning finished piece and leaving with the skills to keep weaving.

  • You’ll be part of a design community in our weave workshop; working with like-minded people, as well as being in the heart of Nottingham, famous for its textile and fashion heritage.
  • With a limited class size, you'll have the one-to-one attention you need to ensure you leave with a completed product that you’re happy with.
  • Benefit from learning with an experienced and passionate technician on state-of-the-art weaving looms.
  • On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance.

What you’ll study

This course will focus on design in woven textiles, and you will learn the fundamentals of weaving, including making a warp and setting up a loom.

You will have access to NTU’s extensive yarn store to select and choose from a wide range of fibres to experiment with and make samples.

You’ll apply the techniques you have learnt to make woven cloth for interiors/upholstery, for fashion, or to create a contemporary woven textile art piece.

During this course, you will:

  • explore the basics of hand weaving, from warp to weave
  • dive into the yarn store to handpick fibres that speak to your style
  • design and craft a warp that bursts with your creative vision
  • be introduced to warp making and learn to wind a warp onto a loom
  • thread your loom and weave sample ideas before designing and weaving your final piece.

By the end of the course, you’ll walk away with a completed handwoven masterpiece, alongside an exciting new set of weaving skills.

Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll study during the course:

Discover what weaving is and how to set up your loom. Design a warp that excites you and begin winding it onto your loom.

Finish preparing your warp, learn how to thread your loom, and get weaving on the dynamic ARM Touch 60 Loom.

Experiment with samples, test textures and colours, and get one-to-one feedback before focusing on your final design.

Let the loom sing! Dive into your final woven piece and bring your vision to life with confidence and flair.

Learn the art of finishing techniques to transform your fabric. From softening to shaping, explore how to perfect your final piece.

How you’re taught

You’ll enjoy a mix of group workshops and hands-on one-to-one support, surrounded by colour, texture, and creativity.

With yarn in your hands and the rhythmic hum of looms, every moment will feel inspiring; every experience is as tactile as it is transformative.

This course will be delivered in person on Nottingham Trent University city campus.
