NTU and Afrika Sports Foundation

Research Project Overview

The Afrika Sports Foundation Center’s mission is to use sports education as a vehicle for sports excellence and social change that ultimately improves the lives of individuals, communities and the region. They have the vision to become the best centre for sports excellence in the country.

The focus of this partnership is to assist the Foundation in achieving this goal through knowledge exchange, building capacity at the center, and particularly, working in the area of coach education. This partnership formally began in 2026 and is currently in its early stages.

Methodological Approach

Utilising principles of Knowledge Exchange, the project will seek to do the following as  the partnership becomes more established:

  1. Utilise current knowledge from the Department of Sport Science to drive improvements in coach education through the development of resources and talks to upskill staff at the Foundation
  2. Develop new projects to support coach development in the local area
  3. Utilise knowledge across the Eastern Africa Centre to explore projects around entrepreneurship to develop means for local women to create and sell the products that they make

Visits

April 2024 – Dr Katie Taylor and Dr Seth Kirby visited the Afrika Sports Foundation Center to gather information on the site, see the facilities in action, and meet staff to understand the ambitions and challenges that the Foudation faces.

March 2026 – Dr Mariam Mell’Osiime Mpaata and Imran Mpaata visited NTU to visit the Department of Sport Science to see our facilities, give guest talks to students and staff, and formally sign a Memorandum of Understanding between NTU and the Foundation.
