Magnificat
Stay With Me Lord – Will Todd
Air for Strings – Paul Carr
Magnificat – Kim Andre Arnessen
i.Magnificat anima mea
Magnificat anima mea Dominum.
Et exultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo.
Quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae.
My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for He has looked on the humble estate of His servant.
ii.Ecce enim
Ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent omnes generationes.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed.
iii.Quia fecit
Quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est: et sanctum nomen eius. Sicut locutus est ad patres nostros.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is His name. As He spoke to our fathers.
iv.Et misericordia
Et misericordia eius et progenies in progenies, timentibus eum.
And His mercy is for those who fear Him.
v.Fecit potentiam
Fecit potentiam in brachio suo, dispersit superbos mente cordis sui. Deposuit potentes de sede, et exaltavit humiles.
He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; He has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate.
vi. Suscepit Israel
Suscepit Israel puerum suum, recordatus misericordiae suae.
He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy.
vii.Gloria Patri
Gloria Patri et filio et Spiritui Sancto.
Sicut erat in principio et nunc et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Magnificat is the Virgin Mary's song of praise to God after one of the Bible's greatest wonders: the angel Gabriel visiting her with the message that she is to be the mother of God's son. In his setting, composer Kim André Arnesen expresses the feelings Mary must have felt: wonder, devotion, gratitude, joy, humility, hope, and compassion. God's selection of an unknown woman living in poverty to be the mother of His son is a bottom-up view of the world if ever there was one – and Arnesen sees the Magnificat as offering support and hope for all people struggling against adversity or in need of strength.

Previous performances have included works by John Rutter, Karl Jenkins and Ola Gjeilo in venues such as the Albert Hall, Southwell Minster and the University Hall.
Two years ago EPM joined the NTU chamber choir for the memorable concert of the works of Paul Carr - including the first performance of his saxophone concerto- with the composer present:-
“ It was lovely to have English Pro Musica playing the concert on Saturday in the glorious acoustic of Southwell Minster. What a great band of musicians they are, and some very fine solo playing too in some of the pieces. A richly hued sound from the strings in the “Air” and in the Saxophone Concerto, with the 2 oboes and harp blending perfectly in the Stabat Mater. It was a beautiful programme of my music and I could not have been more elated.”
EPM recently gave the premiere of Martin Ellerby’s Mass of the Winged Lion, specially commissioned by Ryton Choral Society. We have recently completed a winter tour of The Snowman for Jenmat Productionsin venues including Norwich and Swansea. In the summer we shall be renewing our association with north-west based Heritage Opera in performances of Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore and Puccini’s Madam Butterfly.
