A world-leading research institution – REF 2021

Nottingham Trent University delivered sector-leading progress in REF 2021, with 83% of research rated world-leading or internationally excellent. NTU was named the most improved university, reflecting its commitment to high-quality, impactful research.

Double recipient of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2015 and 2021

NTU is a two-time recipient of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize (2015 and 2021), recognising outstanding national contributions. The awards celebrate world-leading research in cultural heritage science and excellence in safety and security for global citizens.

NTU achieved 5 QS Stars in the latest QS Stars University Rankings, highlighting strengths across teaching, employability and student experience. The University is ranked 609th worldwide.

NTU has retained the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award since 2013, demonstrating a long-term commitment to the Concordat principles and to supporting researchers’ career development.

Outstanding research accomplishments

Professor Rowena Hill - Member of the British Empire (MBE)

Rowena Hill, Professor of Resilience, Emergencies and Disaster Science was awarded a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours in recognition of her outstanding public service. She received the honour for her role as collaborative lead for the Covid-19 National Foresight Group (C19 NFG), which played a pivotal role in understanding the impacts of the pandemic.

Professor Paul Evans awarded the Dennis Gabor Medal

Distinguished Professor and Royal Wolfson Fellow, Professor Paul Evans received the prestigious Dennis Gabor Medal in 2017 in recognition of his pioneering research into material-specific, 3D X-ray imaging and its application in security screening- work that has significantly enhanced the safety of the travelling public.

NTU researchers secure first-ever fellowships from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council

In April 2025, Dr Martina Gabrielli and Dr Yuri Kawaguchi were each awarded prestigious Discovery Fellowships from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) — marking the first time NTU researchers have received this highly competitive award.
