Project

NTU P-ACE

Unit(s) of assessment: Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience; Law; Social Work and Social Policy

Research theme(s): Safety and Sustainability

School: Nottingham Law School; School of Social Sciences; School of Science and Technology

The NTU P-ACE brings together 14 existing policing, industry and community partners to translate research findings into actionable, transferable, and sustainable policy interventions.

It will consolidate and expand its already extensive experience of working with police and industrial partners to mobilise knowledge and co-create dissemination materials in a format that is accessible to police and their stakeholders, and translate research findings into actionable policy and practice. The NTU P-ACE will implement fast-track knowledge mobilisation through multiple digital platforms to support an inclusive and diverse approach to accessibility, and develop sustainable, evidence-informed approaches to advance the effectiveness of UK policing.

Areas of focus

  • Crime prevention - led by Professor Andy Newton
  • Public trust and transparency -  led by  Professor Loretta  Trickett
  • Climate crisis -  led by  Professor  Rowena  Hill
  • Identification and tracing -  led by  Associate Professor  Rachel Bolton-King
  • Surveillance and sensing  -  led by  Associate Professor  Rachel Bolton-King

These areas of focus will inform NTU P-ACE's activities through the lifetime of the centre and will focus on research, knowledge exchange and practice engagement.  Through the P-ACE's flexible fund and engagement with our 14 partners and Nottingham Civic Exchange, we will endeavour to showcase evidence-informed practice and help to make a sustainable difference for policing and the communities they serve.

NTU P-ACEs Work

Whilst the centre is still developing we have shared a series of example projects and reports that highlight the work our team and partners have done across the five ARIs our P-ACE is focusing on.

NTU P-ACE Summary Slides

These slides, taken from the P-ACE launch event on Tuesday 4 November, give an indicative summary of our work, our people and our aims for NTU P-ACE.

View the slides here.

Crime Prevention

Our centre director, Professor Andy Newton, leads our work on crime prevention. This work builds on extensive engagement across NTU's strategic research theme and a wide variety of experts. An example of this work and the impact it is having can be seen through this summary of our work to help better understand and tackle public space violence against women and girls, which began in Essex and is now being scaled to other force areas and crime types.

Read about the Minerva  Approach here.

Identification and tracing & Surveillance and sensing

Our work on identification, tracing, surveillance and sensing is led by Associate Professor  Rachel Bolton-King. We have pulled together a summary of this work that you can view online.

Climate Crisis

Professor Rowena Hill is the centre's lead for our work on the climate crisis and civil contingencies. Over the last few years, she has led the Climate Security National Foresight Group. This is a cross-disciplinary group of strategic leaders and decision-makers from across organisations in the UK, with academic experts, policymakers and analysts coming together to make a difference. The academics, policy makers and analysts will connect and share their knowledge, expertise and evidence-based actions, and the strategic leads will share their strategic coordinated effort to prepare, plan and manage the expected impacts, ensuring that together we adapt to climate change in the UK.

Read our outputs and wider aims on the project page.

Public Trust and Transparency

Professor Loretta Trickett leads NTU's work on trust in Policing for P-ACE. This work reaches across a broad array of topic areas and has been helpfully summaried through a slide deck for the P-ACE launch event in November.

To gain an initial understanding of this work, download her deck here.
