Research at Nottingham Business School

At Nottingham Business School (NBS), our research combines academic excellence with a powerful and positive impact on business and society. Lay solid foundations for your future career here as you gain the skills, strategies and experience to take your career in whichever direction you choose.

Our research focus

Here at NBS, our mission is 'to provide education and research that combines academic excellence with impact, transforming business and organisation through knowledge and people' (NBS Blue Sky Vision 2011 - 2016).

To contribute to this mission, developing research which addresses the challenges faced by both UK and international business organisations, we support research across five departments:

Research groups

We have six research groups currently in operation, all highlighting the School's particular areas of expertise and providing a focal point for students:

All of our PhD students are active members of these research groups. As a new student, your supervisors will advise you which group(s) to join, according to your research interests. The groups provide ample opportunities for you to engage in the preparation of academic symposia and other events, and to network with academics across the School and with visiting professors.

Furthermore, you could find a very welcoming audience to whom to present your research / ideas. You would receive feedback that will certainly boost your presentation skills and confidence, as well as contributing to your viva voce preparations and future job interviews.

In addition, a small number of academics are attached to specialist research centres that work in highly specialised areas, including:

The Responsible and Sustainable Business Lab

The Centre for People, Innovation and Performance

The National Retail Research Knowledge Exchange Centre

Nottingham Business School is located in our state-of-the-art Newton building, with:

  • dedicated areas for our postgraduate and professional students to study, relax and socialise
  • a number of collaborative working areas, meeting and social spaces
  • a computer suite and Wi-Fi access
  • a Business Library combining multimedia technology with traditional information sources
  • a Trading Room with 12 double-screen workstations, access to worldwide financial markets data and sophisticated analysis tools.

Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014

Research across Nottingham Business School has increased significantly over the last five years and 2013 marked an important step in reflecting upon our research achievements through our submission for REF 2014.

What was clear from our audit was that a deepening research culture has proved inspirational in engaging a greater percentage of faculty to participate in research activities. This has led to a demonstrable increase in research outputs measured through NBS's key performance indicators (KPI's). In turn there has been a concomitant increase in research across all academic divisions and grades of faculty which continues to embed a research culture across NBS.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 classified our Research Impact as 100% internationally excellent.

Supporting you through your studies

All of our research degrees incorporate a programme of supporting studies designed to develop knowledge of and skills in all aspects of the research process, including the funding and dissemination of research.
