Ben Morris, Level 4 Higher National Certificate, Construction Design and Build Technician

Ben Morris, studying a Level 4 Higher and National Certificate in Construction Design and Build Technician, shares his apprenticeship experience to date.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

When I was younger I wanted to be an architect and then I discovered  this apprenticeship. I learn better hands-on and felt I’d learn more in this 2 year apprenticeship working 4 days a week than if I went and did the course full time, alongside getting 2 years of work experience in the industry.

What drew you to working with your current employer?

I am carrying out my apprenticeship with Acorn Construction, after a friend showed me the vacancy. I got along with everyone instantly and enjoy the challenge of working within the organisation, I also like the  satisfaction of knowing that there are things being built that I’ve designed.

What does an average week look like?

My week includes design team meetings with big contractors such as Willmot Dixon, Torsion and Bowmer and Kirkland UK and meetings with clients and architects. I also have regular 121’s with my manager going through my drawings, where I am able to ascertain suggested improvements and feedback. Additional, I am responsible for writing up specifications for our work, technical drawing and going to site for measurements.

What new skills have you gained?

My industry knowledge has greatly expanded in this role- you really get to jump in feet first, with lots of opportunities to learn. The role has made me more ambitious and I am working towards developing and growing my career.

I have also learned better time management, confidence of dealing with million pound plus projects and my written and verbal communication has improved.

How do you believe this apprenticeship will affect both your current role and future career?

I have already noticed that with some of the work we have done, its helped me understand the areas in which I can build on and improve. As time goes on, its propelling my efficiency and understanding at work and the support and coaching that comes with it. The qualification helps me if I want to move elsewhere in the future, or grow within my current employer – it gives me an edge.

How have you balanced studying alongside your professional role?

It can be challenging when you're busy, but I have had dedicated time in which I can do some university work. The facilities and equipment are really good at NTU Mansfield if I want to be on site, and my employer provides facilities for me to work at home if needed.

How do you find studying at NTU Mansfield?

The services on campus are fantastic.  On one occasion on an assignment, I had some ill health and I needed to request an extension and an academic guided me through the process and they were so understanding and accommodating. You always get the support you need, teachers will stay after lessons to speak to you. They don’t just speak at you, they want to see you succeed.

What would you say to anyone considering an apprenticeship?

Do it! You get great industry experience -get out there, take the step, try it, work and expand your knowledge in an industry with a good employer and a guaranteed job.
