More about Ilina

Why did you choose to study your course at NTU?

I joined the technical department in my current company back in 2019 as a Quality Assurance Auditor. It was my first role in the technical world. I worked in quality assurance for 2 years, then I was provided the opportunity to progress to a Technical Services Officer. Realising how vast the technical world is, I decided I wanted to pursue and further my career in the department. I understood there were many gaps in my knowledge and skills that would be needed to accomplish my goals. Therefore, I looked into joining a university that can support me to fill these gaps. The course has provided me with so much information I lacked, and this is only after completing my first year.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

I enjoy the opportunity to study alongside having a full-time job. I believe this is so beneficial as I can apply the knowledge straight into my day-to-day job. Being an apprentice also provides the opportunity to be involved in projects that are not related to your role, furthering your understanding of the industry.

How do you find your modules and what have you most enjoyed studying?

The modules are great; they are aligned perfectly with the food industry I am currently in. In the first year we have covered quality assurance, food safety, food chemistry, product development, product manufacturing, and raw materials. I think these modules set a great base for learning that is to come. I have greatly enjoyed our product development module. In my current role at work, I am not involved with NPD in any way, so it was really interesting to see how products come to life. I found it challenging and stressful, but also full of creativity and learning. I might want to join the NPD team in the near future.

What do you think about the facilities available on your course and what do you use the most?

As someone who undertook their high school studies in a different country, I was very impressed with the facilities. The rooms are spacious, bright, clean and warm during the winter months. The facilities are always available and I find it fascinating that lectures record each session so you can revisit it if anything is missed. The library is spacious with enough seating, and the labs are equipped with everything you need to complete your projects.

What do you think about Brackenhurst Campus? What do you get up to in your spare time?

As we are apprentices, we only get to come to campus four weeks per year and unfortunately the schedule is usually quite busy, so we do not get a lot of free time. The free time that we do get, we go for coffee at The Orangery or lunch at The Refectory. Costa coffee at The Orangery is my favourite.

Why would you recommend your course to someone considering studying it?

I would recommend the course to anyone considering it because it is a great opportunity for anyone that wants to work within the food industry to gain knowledge on the subject. The content of the course provides knowledge on all aspects. Facilities and lecturers are amazing. The support is great, you will receive help from everyone you ask.

What are your plans for after the course and how do you feel your course has/ will help you to achieve that goal?

I do not have a particular goal, such as being technical manager, at the moment. However, I want to strive to be more and more knowledgeable each day. This will provide me with the opportunity to one day be at the top of the pyramid.
