More about Katia

Why did you choose to study your course at NTU?

I chose to study geography at NTU because it has a strong reputation of combining theory with hands-on fieldwork, bring geographic concepts to life. Also has a focus on environmental issues aligns with my passion for understanding global challenges. The university has industry connection and helps career preparations for building a career in geography.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

I enjoy the passion the tutors bring to teaching and involving us with the topics and modules and their openness to help whenever we need it. The field trips and the close bonds with my course mates and been appreciated.

How do you find your modules and what have you most enjoyed studying?

I’ve found my modules from internation development to hazards and learning how to use GIS which has been fun to work with. I have enjoyed the field trips the most as you first-hand experience geographic concepts in real-life and how they form our world.

What do you think about the facilities available on your course and what do you use the most?

The are various facilities available on my course but being able to schedule a meeting with a tutors has been the most useful as you are able to have one-on-one discussions and also builds your relationship with them. The library has also been helpful for research and help on writing and technical issues.

What do you think about Brackenhurst Campus? What do you get up to in your spare time?

I have never lived at Brackenhurst but appreciate the quietness and ability to be in the surrounding scenery and the walks nearby. The Orangery has been a nice area to work, chat and to be in overlooking the campus. Southwell also has a few nice restaurants and coffee shops worth visiting.

What is your top tip for someone considering studying/living at Brackenhurst Campus?

I would recommend having walking boots and waterproof jacket with you when going on field trips at Brackenhurst. Also, the Brack Bar always has events going on a is a fun place to socialise with other people. The bus from city is always reliable and is not too bad when your with friends or can even nap on it.

Have you been involved in any placements, work experience or volunteering as part of your course? If so, what company did you do it for, what was your role/responsibilities and what did you achieve?

I am currently on placement at Northampton Saints rugby club as the sustainability intern. I am helping with their carbon reporting and further sustainable initiatives that the club would like to do. So far it has been an invaluable experience seeing how clubs across different sports are changing their operations and certainty is a growing sector.

Why would you recommend your course to someone considering studying it?

I would recommend it as the gives you a degree but gives you much more and can show you the opportunities that you can pursue. The size of the course gives you more insight and the content is able to interest you. The field trip are memories made with course mates but also gives you the experience to go somewhere that you wouldn’t normally go. The campus it a great place to study and a break from the city and busy pace.

What are your plans for after the course and how do you feel your course has/ will help you to achieve that goal?

I plan to work in sustainability looking as sports in sustainability or for a company that all have the goal to be net zero in the next decade and is an involving industry. The course has made me passionate from doing a module and seeing how it is applied in companies and the impact it will have if no action is taken. The placement has been helpful to meet connections already in the space and have insights into what is coming next for sectors.
