More about Thomas
Why did you choose to study your course at NTU?
Currently the Equine industry is in a state of flux with animal welfare being the crucial factor to our changing social licence. NTU’s degree focussed more on welfare over the more generic equine science master’s degrees offered at other universities. As I foresee this being where the most jobs will be in the future I decided to attend NTU
What made your mind up about studying a PG course at Brackenhurst Campus?
Open day, nice campus within an hour’s drive of home and course tutor staff being known industry wide.
What do you enjoy most about your course?
Sense of community within my course cohort.
How do you find your modules and what have you most enjoyed studying/ researching?
My modules were very informative, although to begin with I was frustrated with ethics as it was very tricky, by the end of the module I really appreciate its value and has been highly transferrable in the profession sphere post-graduation. My master’s thesis revolved around measuring public perceptions of horse welfare alongside using an objective methodology of eye tracking to determine where they were looking to form their opinions.
What do you think about the facilities available on your course and what do you use the most?
The facilities at NTU are fantastic, the area we used the most was the Brackenhurst hall quiet room, this was the perfect size for all my cohort to meet up, eat food and discuss our lecture and work.
What do you think about Brackenhurst Campus? What do you get up to in your spare time?
Brackenhurst is just a beautiful campus with lots of lovely walks in our breaks, that and the Orangery coffee shop really keeps you going.
What is your top tip for someone considering studying/ living at Brackenhurst Campus?
Ensure all your devices have a decent level of charge before lectures as some of the rooms do not have as many sockets, use the library and Brackenhurst hall at lunch to charge devices if needed.
Have you been involved in any placements, work experience or volunteering as part of your course? If so, what did you do and what did you achieve?
I won an internship day with CEO of British Eventing Rosie Williams, this was invaluable, her main piece of advice “under promise, overachieve” has worked well at my new job.
Why would you recommend your course to someone considering studying it?
The lecturers are fantastic
What are your plans for after the course and how do you feel your course has/ will help you to achieve that goal?
Currently working as the manager of the Miliary Animal Rehoming Centre
Any additional comments?
The community at Brackenhurst was fantastic, lecturers were always around for a cup of coffee to discuss any immediate needs, or in some cases just for a general chit chat about the world.
