Why NTU…

Why did you choose NTU and your course?

NTU provided not only an insightful and creative course but offered such a wide variety of resources and equipment to help me to flourish. They presented to me many spaces with tools where I could create my visions and bring these to life. NTU also embraced the student life as an important factor in my experience, as for me, moving away from home was difficult and I wanted to be a part of a university that supported me.

What do you think about the course staff? How do they support your learning and university experience?

The course staff at NTU have always been around and easy to get hold of when I had a query. I found that a number of the course staff would always check in with me to ensure I was on the right track and that I was managing. As this course can become quite intense, having a strong team to support you from all angles, whether that be in terms of a brief, pastoral care and general queries, has made me feel part of a community.

Have you been involved in any live projects of briefs on your course and if so, can you talk a bit about one you really enjoyed?

In one module, we were fortunate to do a live case study on our own NTU design building that is currently being built. Being able to go on site and take a look closely at the detailed process, gave me a great insight into what I will be a part of when I go into the workplace. This in a way, opened up my own interpretations of architecture as I was able to see design being put to work.

Does the “real” NTU match what you’d imagined? How does it compare with your friends’ experience at other universities?

I’ve spoken with a few friends that feel their campus is all over the place with no real heart to it. I feel so fortunate to have an excellent set of resources right on my doorstep, all in one place. I anticipated NTU to be quite a lively place but with no where as near the support I have received so far. There seems to be support teams for absolutely everything here, so it makes me feel quite comfortable knowing I’m not alone. NTU is seen to be the party university, but I don’t think they realise the other side to it. To get the full university experience, NTU has offered me that, both work, experience, society, and party can all create an excellent experience.

How would you promote NTU to potential students in 10 words or fewer?

NTU provides a supportive, insightful and prosperous experience.

Outside of the Lecture Theatre…

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

NTU set up a variety of ice-breaker workshops which made it easier to talk to people and to share common interests. Being around people with the same common goal, allowed me to talk freely and create a strong friendship group.

The Next Steps…

What’s next for you after NTU?

When I graduate in summer of 2024, I hope to take a short time out while I look for a job. I’d like to find a position that tests my limits and skills. This would ideally be close to home. From here, after a year, I would love to work with the same firm but under an apprenticeship in order to gain my Part 2 and 3 qualification.

Has the employability team helped you plan for life beyond NTU?

They’ve provided me with numerous resources on what certain employers are looking for and how to approach it as well as set up regular networking events with a variety of companies covering the entire Design quarter. By exposing me early to these connections, has not only built my confidence but is prepping me for when I finish. I’ve had a couple of meetings with them where they’ve been very supportive and helpful.

How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?

It has set up many networking events to show what the workplace is like as well as helping me with formatting CV’s, cover letters and a portfolio, ready to submit for any role.

NTU are constantly setting up workshops to open up the horizon on different fields within my current course. I’ve had the opportunity to learn new skills such as public speaking and presentations.

Advice...

What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?

If you are wanting to develop your skills, communication and thrive in your own personal strength, NTU is for you. If you want that all-round experience where you can enjoy but work hard with a strong community around you, NTU is for you.
