Why NTU…
Why did you choose NTU and your course?
I chose to study BSc (Hons) Real Estate because of my longstanding passion for property and my experience working in an estate agency. While researching my options, I discovered that I could turn this passion into a degree, allowing me to deepen my knowledge and build a career in the industry.
I chose NTU because of its strong focus on vocational learning, ensuring a practical, industry-relevant education. Additionally, NTU’s high student satisfaction rating was a key factor, as I wanted a supportive environment after leaving my previous university due to poor pastoral support.
What did you think about the course staff? How did they support your learning and university experience?
I genuinely enjoy my course and the teaching staff are exceptional. Their extensive industry experience - many still actively working or maintaining strong professional connections - ensures high quality teaching. Moreover, they provide invaluable guidance on placements and internships, always willing to offer support. Their personal approach fosters a learning environment where students feel valued, both academically and personally.
Have you been involved in any live projects of briefs on your course and if so, can you talk a bit about one you really enjoyed?
One project I particularly enjoyed was the Corporate Relocation Project, where we acted as consultants to help a client secure a new office space. This involved assessing their needs, defining key requirements, and developing a strategic sourcing plan. We then identified the most suitable office building and delivered a professional proposal and presentation to the client, refining both my analytical and presentation skills in a real-world context.
Does the “real” NTU match what you’d imagined? How does it compare with your friends’ experience at other universities?
NTU has exceeded my expectations in every way. While many of my friends at other universities struggle with a lack of support, NTU provides a strong and supportive network for its students. Additionally, NTU offers excellent career connections and places a strong emphasis on graduate employment, whereas many of my friends have received little to no guidance in this area.
Could you please explain more about your recent placement, and what you did during this time?
During my recent Property Operations Internship at McCarthy Stone, I gained hands-on experience in property management and real estate development. My main responsibilities included: a Model Development Project where I analysed property activities and performed a gap analysis to enhance portfolio management; a Sustainability Initiative for which I researched and identified methods to improve sustainability across existing developments; Interdepartmental Collaboration working closely with different teams to understand their roles and how they communicate; Site Visits to both active and completed sites, deepening my understanding of site assessments and development opportunities.
This experience strengthened my analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, further solidifying my interest in becoming a property surveyor.
How did you source your placement?
To secure the placement, I reached out to McCarthy Stone’s recruitment team via email, inquiring about potential summer internships suited to my skills and interests. They responded with a list of available opportunities and highlighted one that aligned well with my background. From there, I began the application process.
What advice would you give to an NTU student about to begin a placement?
Be proactive and open-minded. Ask questions, seek feedback, and take on as many tasks as possible. Build strong relationships with colleagues, as networking can create future opportunities, and embrace challenges to grow your skills and confidence.
What’s next for you after NTU?
I plan to pursue a career as a property surveyor, building on my industry experience and academic knowledge. I have secured a Graduate Commercial Surveyor role with Knight Frank in their London team and am keen to start working towards sitting my APC (Assessment of Professional Competence).
Has the employability team helped you plan for life beyond NTU?
NTU's employability fairs helped me make connections and identify companies I was keen to work for.
How would you promote NTU to potential students in 10 words or fewer?
Industry-focused, supportive, exceptional student experience.
