More about Benita
Why did you choose NTU and your course?
My top two priorities in choosing a university were the quality of the courses offered and the support provided for international students. Studying abroad was a significant step, so it was essential for my chosen course to comprehensively prepare me for the industry. The program I selected promised exactly that, with a well-rounded curriculum, engaging extracurricular opportunities, and innovative semesters that emphasized collaboration and industry exposure.
Another key factor in my decision was NTU’s exceptional reputation for student support, particularly for international students. The university offers a wide range of resources to help students settle into a new country while maintaining their academic performance. These factors made NTU the perfect choice for me.
What was your favourite thing about studying in the School of Art & Design?
My favorite aspect of studying in the School of Art & Design was that it went far beyond traditional book-to-brain learning. Every part of the curriculum had a clear structure and direct industry-level applications. It was fascinating to see how even small assignments connected to real-world scenarios, giving us valuable insights into the fashion industry and breaking down many misconceptions we had about working in the field.
Another highlight was collaborating with like-minded peers from slightly different specializations. For example, working alongside Fashion Marketing and Management students in shared classes helped us explore diverse perspectives and approaches, enriching our understanding of the industry as a whole.
What do you think of the course facilities? How do they compare to your work in industry?
The course facilities largely aligned with industry standards. In professional settings, facilities are often tailored to the specific needs of each department, which isn’t always feasible for every course in a university. That said, I do wish there had been more structured opportunities to learn new software, perhaps through dedicated classes. However, every necessary software was made available across different buildings, so students who were committed could always access the required tools.
It’s worth noting that progress was being made even during my time there, particularly with the establishment of the NTU NEXT team, which focused on future technologies and provided students with exciting opportunities to explore cutting-edge innovations.
Did you get a chance to work on any live projects or competitions during your studies? What was this experience like?
Yes, I had several exciting opportunities to work on live projects and competitions during my studies, which were incredibly enriching experiences. One standout project was a research collaboration with my course lead, where we explored immersive shopping experiences. This allowed me to delve into innovative ideas and gain a deeper understanding of how emerging technologies can transform retail.
I also participated in a collaborative project with a Canadian university. This experience was invaluable in developing teamwork and leadership skills, as we had to navigate cultural differences, manage responsibilities, and ensure the project’s success as a cohesive team.
Additionally, I contributed articles to a popular student journal introduced by the university. Writing for the journal not only helped me improve my communication skills but also gave me the chance to explore creative expression and share ideas with a broader audience.
These opportunities collectively enhanced both my professional and personal growth, preparing me for future challenges.
Did you get involved with any other opportunities at NTU?
Yes, I took advantage of several opportunities at NTU that significantly enriched my experience. I served as the course representative, which was an incredible opportunity to develop my leadership skills. Representing my peers and acting as a bridge between students and faculty taught me how to effectively communicate, solve problems, and take initiative.
I also participated in a university-organized trip, which provided valuable exposure and a chance to connect with my peers and industry professionals outside the classroom setting. Additionally, I joined the NTU NXT society, which focuses on innovative technologies. Being part of this society allowed me to deepen my knowledge of emerging trends in fashion, particularly in my niche of fashion tech. Staying updated on these advancements has better prepared me for the industry and helped me align my skills with future demands.
These experiences not only enhanced my personal growth but also gave me a competitive edge for my career.
