More about Gez
Why did you choose NTU and your course?
Working in the industry for over 20 years, I’d seen the music and events offering at NTU continue to grow. In 2021 I had a change in circumstances that allowed me to consider studying for a degree. NTU had launched the BA Music Business which was the ideal course, at the ideal location backed by an established University.
What was your favourite thing about studying at NTU?
My favourite thing about studying at NTU was the access to real industry professionals. The Lecturers had proven relevant and current experience, as well as the links to industry through Spencer Wells which has proven invaluable.
What do you think of the course facilities? How do they compare to your work in industry?
The facilities were excellent, we were provided access to equipment that might otherwise be considered prohibitively expensive to freelance practitioners starting out.
Have you worked on any live briefs or competitions?
From the outset there was opportunity to work at events like Beat The Streets and Hockley Hustle, I also took on a role for Denizen Records which provided an excellent addition to my CV.
Did you get involved with any other opportunities at NTU. How did these opportunities improve your experience?
I was the course rep for 3 years – I felt the course team were engaged in the thoughts and feelings of the students and this provided an opportunity to help shape the course.
What job are you currently doing and what does it involve?
I manage a creative business in Derby (Alpha Pro Creative) which offers rehearsal/workshop/tuition space on site, as well as providing PA, backline, and staff services for artists/venues/festivals/events.
I also run an artist management/development company which works with artists on a contract, or pay as you need basis ranging from musicians starting out, to musicians wanting to level up to be full time.
How has your experience at NTU helped you in your current role?
The critical analysis aspect of the degree has helped me with decision making and prioritising with business decisions, especially considering consumer behaviour and marketing. I use this skill constantly when looking at events we’re running or helping with, as well as when I’m mentoring musicians and getting them to think about their targets and how they might achieve them.
If you could give new students some advice, what would it be?
Your tutors are there because they want to help the next generation, trust them. Put the work in early and listen to feedback as they will push you to think harder and excel in what you’re doing.
What was the process of getting to where you are today?
As a somewhat mature student that didn’t have access to these kind of facilities when I was younger, I am where I am today by doing a lot of learning the hard way. My degree has helped galvanise and refine my many years of practical knowledge and I’m now in a position where I can operate and grow my businesses much more efficiently.
