More about Lily
Why did you choose NTU and your course?
I chose my course due to the history of the music scene in Nottingham, Hockley in particular and NTUs brilliant open day.
I attended taster sessions for music business after initially studying psychology and was very impressed with the buildings, equipment, support and opportunities available.
What's your favourite thing about your course at NTU?
The hands-on approach of supplying us with useful connections and personal industry experience from varied outlooks. I also like how every member of staff is an expert in every field of the industry and will happily dedicate their time to helping you.
How have you found the course facilities
The facilities are immaculate; booking equipment and spaces is easy and extremely useful.
Have you worked on any live briefs or competitions?
I hosted and organised an event in my first year called Battle Of The Bands, and I managed a band in second year which was so successful that I have decided to carry it on even now. Their journey has included organising over 30 gigs in a year and built up to a headline EP Release event. This year I will also be hosting a day-festival as my Final Major Project.
Has your course included any guest speakers or industry trips?
The course has had multiple guest speakers from different areas/experience levels within the industry and our yearly trip to DITTO in London features hundreds of guest speakers and opportunities to interact with them.
What three words would you use to describe Nottingham?
Creative, lively, musical.
What do you think of the creative and cultural scene in Nottingham? Is Nottingham a good city for an Art & Design student?
100000%, I can’t think of anywhere better. I have never seen a space so dedicated to showcasing and supporting local creatives.
Where would you recommend visiting in Nottingham?
Hockley as an obvious answer, but also green spaces like Colwick Park. The city can feel a little overwhelming at times with all the hustle and bustle but escaping to quiet walks and beautiful sights really helps.
If you could give new students some advice, what would it be?
Have a work-life balance that is maintainable. Do NOT leave everything until the last minute…although the library is open 24h!
What do you think of the course staff?
I think they’re a wonderful group of people each with insightful takes on the music industry and really worth having a chat with even outside of lectures.
Have you used any of the student support services or NTU’s Employability team? How have you found this experience?
Yes, some lovely members of staff on the employability team have given presentations to help with things such as writing a CV and generally how to find employment after graduation. It’s really useful to know.
What’s next for you after NTU?
I will continue to manage Sunk and hopefully go from working part time to full time at DHP within my role as a Concerts Assistant, I will also continue to host events and projects.
