I love the amount of pride I get when I have made a garment after so much hard work. I also enjoy the freedom to be creative in whichever way you want.

More about Olivia

What made you choose to study at NTU?
“Since I was young, I used to look forward to going to university. As soon as I heard about Nottingham Trent University I had it set in my heart to go there. When I attended an open day I knew it was going to be the right place for me.”

What do you enjoy most about your course?
“I love the amount of pride I get when I have made a garment after so much hard work. I also enjoy the freedom to be creative in whichever way you want.”

How did it feel to win the ‘Star Piece’ award as part of the River Island live project?
“Unbelievable, I never imagined I’d win such a fantastic award. When they announced my name I was brought to tears, it’s such a huge achievement - my best so far.”

What is the most valuable thing you have learnt from studying BA (Hons) Fashion Design?
“Timing! I learnt the importance of planning my time because nothing is impossible if you just have your life in order. The course taught me that I can do anything I want in life, I just need to focus.”

Has the course included any live industry briefs?
Linda Leaver came in to brief a project that challenged us to design collections for those with physical disabilities. My good friend is disabled so to have an opportunity to use my knowledge on disability to help people with fashion meant the world to me. The technicians are supportive and are always proud of you when you succeed at something.”

What do you think about the facilities available to you?
“The studio space is great, the amount of cutting space is fantastic. We have the opportunity to use the print, embroidery, dye and laser cutting facilities which enables us to go the extra mile with our designs. The Boningtons art shop is great, it has everything you might want to buy as part of you course.”

What do you like about studying and living in Nottingham?
“I like the fact that everything you need is just a two minute walk away. The accommodation is well planned out and very safe at all times. I love the city’s nightlife - which is obviously very important in freshers' week!”

What are your ambitions for the future?
“Fabrics are my dream, I love sourcing them. It’s a real joy of mine, so maybe something in that.”
