Why NTU…

What inspired you to study your language?

I decided to study Arabic as a result of my career aspirations to work in the Middle East. My career goal is to work as a lawyer in Dubai. Though speaking Arabic is not a necessity as a lawyer in Dubai; it is advantageous, as top employers value this asset. Furthermore, I would be able to collaborate with colleagues a lot easier, and, I can potentially work on different types of cases, as opposed to just English cases.

Additionally, I decided to study Arabic as I am always travelling to countries in the Middle East. Conversing with natives can sometimes be challenging, as not everyone speaks English. Therefore, by learning Arabic, I have been able to hold conversations with individuals, bargain, and overall to just enjoy the beauty of the language!

Why did you choose to study your language at NTU?

I chose to study Arabic at NTU partially due to the reason I am also an Undergraduate Law student. However, I particularly liked how the classes for Arabic are set in small groups, which makes the learning process a lot more fun and easier.

How did you find the sign-up process and attending your classes? (Are you attending in person, online etc)

The sign-up process is very simple, with sign ups being held online. The course can either be held in person, or virtually; to ensure easy accessibility for those who cannot attend. I am attending in person classes, which I find easier as I am already on campus. For those who aren’t NTU Students; it is easy to find the classes through the NTU Timetable service.

What’s your experience been like of your language course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?

Overall, the course has been thoroughly enjoyable. I enjoy coming into class as everyone is always ready to learn and the positive atmosphere in class helps with the learning process.

The main highlight is definitely the fact I was able to secure an internship in a Dubai law firm; as a result of my advantage of knowing Arabic! The employer was impressed with this, and as a result of my drive and passion for Arabic, they accepted me for an internship for the summer of 2026.

I’d say, if you have career aspirations to work in the Middle East, you will find it a valuable asset to learn the Arabic language; as this is not something all expats in the Middle East do!

Have you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your language studies?

Not particularly, however, I have friends that live in the United Arab Emirates who have been helping me with learning Arabic as well.

Support...

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at the University Language Programme (ULP) and NTU?

The support from the course teacher is amazing. She truly is passionate about teaching Arabic and creates a positive learning atmosphere. If you have any questions you can either email the teacher directly, or, ask in or after the class.

Moreover, if you are behind in any work, or, require any extensions due to specific reasons, the teachers are great at accommodating for this.

Outside of the Lecture Theatre…

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in?

It was very easy to make friends! We are all in the class for the same reason, to learn a new language, however, we all have our own personal goals as well. So, either in the classroom, or outside of the classroom; talking to each other was very welcoming. Everyone is also very supportive, so if there is something you need support with, a classmate will always be happy to help. It is truly a friendly atmosphere and very sociable, so, if you are a shy individual, I can guarantee you will reach out of your comfort zone in this class in a good way!

Advice...

What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying a language course at NTU?

As there are many words you’ll learn; I would recommend compiling a separate vocabulary book. This can be either online or a physical copy; and it is a very handy tool for when you have forgotten a word; or, need a quick reference. Putting the vocabulary into sections is recommended as well, as then you won’t be confused when looking for the words! This is also a good idea for grammar; as there will be a lot to learn!

Don’t be scared to learn a new language. You might find it a bit intimidating at first, however, try the taster sessions out, ask any questions you may have. The tutors are there to support you, not to make you feel anxious in class!
