Why NTU…
What inspired you to study your subject?
I’ve always loved English language, from learning about how it works to the influence it has. Linguistics was completely new to me at first, but I gave it a chance, and I am really glad I did. It has opened a whole new way of understanding the language I’ve always enjoyed studying. I have enjoyed learning about areas I wasn’t aware of before.
Why did you choose your course and NTU?
English language and linguistics at NTU appealed to me because of its versatility, with modules such as forensic linguistics, communication disorders and teaching English as a foreign language, I felt like I was able to explore my interest in a field I love studying. NTU also offers a Placement year and the chance to study abroad, giving me real-world experiences alongside my studies. I’ve had a really positive experience with this course. The lecturers are super friendly and supportive, and the modules have been genuinely interesting to learn. I’ve enjoyed having the freedom to pick my own topics for assignments. One highlight for me was being able to explore something I’m really interested in. For example, I wrote about sexism in language. I also enjoyed writing blog posts on more abstract topics, which gave me the chance to try a new writing style.
Have you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?
I am a lead student mentor at NTU, where I support other mentors and partake in welcome sessions for first-year students taking my course. It has been a rewarding experience and has helped develop skills I use for my studies, such as communication and organisation. Being involved in mentoring and being able to offer advice and support to students who were once in the same position as me has also made me feel more confident in my own learning.
