More about Kay

Why NTU?

Why did you choose to study a PGCE?

"I adored English at school; my undergraduate degree was in English Literature, Language and Creative Writing – it was always my passion. I chose to change my career at the age of 36 after 14 years as a buyer. I had become disheartened with my corporate career; I wanted to feel excited by my career again. I chose a PGCE because I wanted the regular university days to support my learning as I had been out the education loop for 13 years! As well on PGCE, you gain the benefits of sharing best practice with weekly check-ins with your peers on your subject and other subjects."

Why did you choose your PGCE course at NTU?

"I chose to study my PGCE at NTU after my interview with the course leader. It didn’t feel like an interview at all as I felt comfortable sharing my ideas, I felt like they were listened to and responded to. When I finished the interview, I was extremely excited at my potential prospects; I was thrilled when I received my course offer. As well, NTU has the legacy of one of the best teacher training institutions nationally and has a long-standing, excellent reputation with fantastic resources to support my studies."

What was your experience of your course?

"The camaraderie on the course with my fellow trainees was a highlight. We truly supported each other every week. As well, guest seminar speakers helped develop our subject knowledge."

Were you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?

"I was a course representative – there were lots of opportunities to be involved in the wider course community."

On Placement

Did you complete any work placements on your course?

"I was based at two schools during my PGCE. Both were extremely supportive, had good relationships with the university and my tutors.

My second placement was at my old school which was a big full-circle moment! I was proud to be returning to the community which developed my love for learning."

Support

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"The course leaders were really supportive, friendly and always on hand to respond to any questions."

Life after NTU

Tell us about what you’re doing now

"I am in my second year of teaching at a secondary school in Nottinghamshire. I am thriving and loving the challenges of the profession – it’s by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done but I am fortunate to have an amazing team around me. I have kept in touch with my PGCE tutor and enjoy sharing updates on what I am doing."
