I was intrigued by their experiences in NLS and I figured it would be a good place to start my postgraduate course.

More about Tan Shwu

Why did you choose NTU and Nottingham Law School?

Asides from the good reviews I have heard about NTU’s Barristers Training Course, I chose NLS because of its high quality teaching facilities and interactive seminars. NTU also provides students with the opportunity to gain international experience with their International Summer School Programme. I am grateful that I was able to participate in 2023’s Summer School in Geneva where asides from being able to travel to a new country, I had the opportunity to learn about International Humanitarian Law and develop an international perspective on legal practice which are skills that you could only learn from a standard classroom setting. The senior lecturers Sophie and Daniel who were in charge of leading the trip were very dedicated and passionate and made the lessons in Geneva memorable and fun. I also had the opportunity to connect with other international students during the Summer School, some of which remained in my close contacts.

Why did you choose postgraduate study at NTU?

I chose NTU and Nottingham Law School in particular is because back in Malaysia, when I was doing my legal internship with various law firms, I had the opportunity to connect with the some of the seniors in my law firm who so happen to be alumni of NLS. I was intrigued by their experiences in NLS and I figured it would be a good place to start my postgraduate course.

What inspired you to study law?

I wanted to study law because I am interested in the subject itself, as to how law integrates itself within our daily lives. With the knowledge I gained I could then contribute to the society by helping those in need.

What do you enjoy about your course?

I enjoyed attending advocacy classes every week. I learned about my strengths and how to overcome my weaknesses in advocacy. I appreciate my advocacy tutor Zuri, for being encouraging, supportive and dedicated in prepping me for courtroom trials in the future.

What marks out of 10 would you give for course facilities and why?

I would give a 10 out of 10 for its mock courtroom which I have not seen in other BTC providers and spacious teaching rooms which make seminar teachings easy as students have to divide themselves into groups for discussion. NTU also has its very own legal clinic (NLS Legal) for students to volunteer and participate in legal aid which I find is a very attractive bonus point.

How would you promote NTU to potential students in 10 words or fewer?

A rewarding and fruitful experience, the course tutors are helpful!

What three words would you use to describe Nottingham?

Lively, compact, suitable (for Students)

Where would you recommend visiting in Nottingham?

I would recommend visiting Heavenly Desserts in Nottingham. As the name portray, the café serves a wide range of desserts which is perfect for students to de-stress and chill with friends over a selection of sweet and savoury treats.

If you have a (non-academic) problem who would you talk to? What would you do?

I would choose to talk to my best friends about my problem and although I do not expect them to tell me what to do, I would ask for their perspective and take into account their advice pertaining the issues I faced.

Finally, is there anything else you’d like to share?

I would like to give a shoutout to none other than the friends I have met during my Bar Training Course with NTU who I am so lucky to have by my side since the day we became friends. We support each other academically and non-academically and they made my BTC experience 100 times more fun than I thought it would. I never thought I would meet a group of best friends whilst enrolling in this course, I am beyond grateful and I wish for this friendship to last for a very long time.
