I have enjoyed exchanging ideas with students from different countries, sharing my own experiences from Bangladesh, and learning how different societies approach similar challenges.

Why NTU...
Why did you choose to study a postgraduate degree?
"My academic journey began in Bangladesh, where I developed a strong interest in politics, governance, and social issues, my undergraduate concentration being journalism. During my undergraduate studies, I became increasingly interested in understanding how policies influence the public sphere, leading to national development. Journalistic studies led me to pursue a short career in journalism where topics of national interest inspired me to explore them in greater depth and hone my analytical skills. Pursuing a postgraduate degree was therefore a natural next step. It has allowed me to expand my knowledge and prepare for a career where I can contribute to policy and governance."
Why did you choose your course at NTU?
"My previous academic studies had already given me a feel for political and social issues in Bangladesh, but I did not want to stop there. I needed to gain a deeper understanding of policymaking and governance in an international context. The MSc Politics & Public Policy programme at Nottingham Trent University stood out because it combines theoretical knowledge with practical policy analysis, with an added component of politics of public policy. I was particularly interested in learning how different political systems address social and economic challenges and how those lessons can be applied across different contexts."
What’s your experience been like of your course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?
"My experience has been challenging, but mostly rewarding. I was already interested in political issues and I have also enjoyed building on that knowledge through advanced study and research an NTU. One of the highlights has been comparing political and policy approaches across different European countries and discussing them with classmates from around the world. These conversations have helped me connect what I learned in Bangladesh with broader global perspectives and real-world policy challenges."
What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?
"At NTU, I have never had to roam around with issues and questions too long without finding answers to them. My tutors have always been very prompt to answer any course related question and smooth out any other road bumps that I came across throughout my entire academic tenure. The NTU staff gave me every bit of logistical and IT support exactly when I needed them and even guided me through steps that seemed a little technical in the easiest manner."
Did you find it easy to settle in at NTU?
"Initially, it was not always easy. I was not able to understand a lot of the things right off the bat, having come from a different country and culture. As time went and I began to make sense of my surroundings and navigate my life around the many twists and turns, settling at NTU felt more natural. Once the novelty wore off, I was able to approach everyone with more confidence and knew that I too, as a foreigner, belonged here. I thank NTU for their warmth and fairness."
The Next Steps…
What’s next for you after NTU?
"Now that I have a higher degree and a profound understanding of governance and policymaking, the world is my oyster. I would very much like to apply my learnings to the public sphere. I try to learn policies from where available and see how they would apply to the UK. I hope to use the knowledge and skills I have gained from both my education in Bangladesh and my postgraduate studies at NTU to build a career in public policy, research, governance, or international development. My goal is to contribute to evidence-based policymaking and help address social and development challenges, particularly in areas that impact communities and public wellbeing."
As an International Student…
Why did you want to study in the UK?
"After completing my journalistic studies in Bangladesh, I wanted to add international academic experience to my belt and learn from a completely different educational system for a fresh up. UK’s global recognition for its world-class teaching and research, particularly in areas such as politics and public policy was intriguing as well as interesting for me. Studying here in the UK has given me the opportunity to explore diverse perspectives, strengthen my academic skills, and broaden my understanding of global political and policy issues."
What experiences have you had as an international student at NTU?
"As an international student from Bangladesh, studying at NTU has been a transformative experience. It has allowed me to build upon the academic foundation I developed in Bangladesh while gaining a global perspective on politics and public policy. I have enjoyed exchanging ideas with students from different countries, sharing my own experiences from Bangladesh, and learning how different societies approach similar challenges. The experience has helped me grow both academically and personally."
What advice would you give to help new international students get settled in at university?
"My advice would be to get involved as much as possible right from the beginning. Attend university events, meet new people, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, because nothing good ever comes from staying in your comfort zone, as tempting as it is. It's quite normal to feel overwhelmed at first, but things do become easier with time. Make use of the support services available, stay connected with friends and family, and embrace every opportunity to learn from the experience. Studying abroad can be challenging, but it is also one of the most rewarding experiences you can have."
