Why NTU...
Why did you choose to study a postgraduate degree?
"I chose to pursue a postgraduate degree to deepen my academic focus and specialise in a field I am truly passionate about. Having already completed a BA and an MA in English Literature, I developed a strong foundation in literary studies, but I wanted to move beyond analysis into creation. Studying Creative Writing allows me to refine my voice as a writer while engaging critically with literature from a creative perspective. This second postgraduate degree represents a natural progression in my academic journey, narrowing my interests and dedicating myself to developing both scholarly insight and creative expression."
Why did you choose your course at NTU?
"I chose to study Creative Writing at Nottingham Trent University because of its strong reputation for nurturing emerging writers through both academic guidance and practical creative engagement. The course offers a supportive and dynamic environment where creative expression is encouraged alongside critical thinking and professional development. I was particularly drawn to NTU’s emphasis on developing individual voice, collaborative learning, and opportunities to engage with the wider literary community. As someone deeply passionate about writing, I felt that NTU provided the ideal space to grow creatively, refine my craft, and prepare for a future in the literary and publishing world."
What’s your experience been like of your course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?
"My experience on the course so far has been incredibly rewarding, and I genuinely enjoy every day of learning here. One of the most valuable aspects has been the workshop sessions, where we read and discuss each other’s scripts in a supportive environment. Receiving thoughtful feedback on my own writing, while also engaging with the creative work of others, has helped me grow both as a writer and as a critical reader.
A personal highlight for me was achieving a distinction in my first essay. I was quite nervous before receiving the results, but seeing my hard work recognised was both reassuring and motivating. It gave me confidence in my abilities and made the experience even more meaningful."
Have you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?
"I have been actively involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities at NTU, which have greatly enriched my university experience alongside my studies. I regularly participate in NTU Arts events and have also had the opportunity to organise and volunteer at several of them. Through these experiences, I attended theatre productions and performances, including a backstage tour, which gave me valuable insight into creative practice beyond the classroom.
I have also taken part in art workshops that allowed me to explore new skills while providing a relaxing and creative balance to my academic work. Additionally, I regularly engage in writing workshops and book clubs, which continue to support my development as a writer.
Beyond this, I am an active member of the NTU Tamil Society, where I have built meaningful friendships and a strong sense of community. One of my favourite experiences was performing during Global Week, which was both exciting and culturally enriching."
What does Social Sciences mean to you?
"To me, Social Sciences represents understanding people, their experiences, and the societies we live in. Through my course, I constantly engage with diverse perspectives and personal stories, which allows me to better understand human emotions, cultures, and social realities. Creative Writing, in many ways, works closely with the principles of Social Sciences, as storytelling requires empathy, observation, and meaningful engagement with people’s lives.
Being part of such a collaborative learning environment has helped me appreciate how communication, creativity, and shared experiences can connect individuals and communities. I believe Social Sciences plays an important role in shaping understanding, encouraging dialogue, and ultimately contributing to positive social and cultural change."
Support…
What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?
"The support available from tutors and staff at NTU has been exceptional. They are incredibly approachable, supportive, and always willing to help whenever needed. I receive valuable guidance and constructive feedback that continuously helps me improve both academically and creatively.
What I appreciate most is how encouraging and kind the teaching staff are — they genuinely take the time to listen, recognise individual progress, and motivate students to grow with confidence. Knowing that I can reach out to them at any time for advice or support has made my learning experience both comfortable and inspiring. Their encouragement has played an important role in helping me adapt, develop my skills, and feel truly valued as a student."
Outside of the Lecture Theatre…
Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?
"Yes, absolutely. I found it quite easy to settle in and build meaningful connections at NTU. Being a Course Representative allowed me to interact closely with other student representatives and helped me feel actively involved in the university community from the beginning. I also spent a lot of time at the Global Lounge, where participating in events introduced me to people from diverse cultural backgrounds and helped me form wonderful friendships.
NTU Arts events played a significant role in helping me connect with students beyond my course, expanding both my creative and social circles. Additionally, being part of the NTU Tamil Society gave me a comforting sense of home, as I met people from my own country who shared my language and culture. Altogether, these experiences made my transition to university life both smooth and enjoyable."
What’s next for you after NTU?
"After completing my studies at NTU, I hope to begin my professional journey in a role where I can meaningfully apply the skills and knowledge I have developed during my course, particularly within the creative and literary fields. I am eager to contribute my writing, creativity, and academic training in a professional environment that allows me to continue growing as a writer.
In the long term, I hope to return to NTU to pursue a PhD in Creative Writing. While I am still exploring the right time for this next step, I am certain that NTU is a place I would love to come back to for my future academic journey."
How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?
"NTU is helping me tremendously to achieve my career goals. The course provides opportunities to meet and learn from professional individuals in the creative and literary fields, offering valuable insights into real-world practice. Workshops, events, and guest sessions allow me to gain practical knowledge, refine my skills, and understand the industry more deeply. Being part of such a supportive and dynamic environment gives me both the confidence and the guidance to prepare for a successful career while continuing to develop my creative and professional identity."
What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?
"Yes, the employability team has been extremely supportive in helping me prepare for life beyond NTU. With their guidance, I was able to secure a university job as a Book Doctor and also work with NTU Arts. They guided me throughout the application and recruitment process, providing advice, feedback, and encouragement every step of the way. Their support has been invaluable in helping me gain practical experience, develop my professional skills, and confidently plan for my future career."
As an International Student…
Why did you want to study in the UK?
"Studying in the UK has been a dream of mine since childhood. As someone passionate about literature, I have always been drawn to English culture and its literary heritage. Most of the novels I read were set in the UK, and many of the writers I admire were born here. I have also studied the history of England and the development of the English language in depth, which has deepened my fascination with the country.
When it came to pursuing Creative Writing, there was no doubt in my mind that the UK was the perfect place. Its rich literary tradition, vibrant creative scene, and strong academic programs made it the ideal environment for me to grow both as a writer and a scholar."
What experiences have you had as an international student at NTU?
"Being an international student at NTU has been an incredibly enriching experience. I have had the opportunity to meet and connect with people from a wide range of cultures, which has broadened my understanding of the world. Adapting to a new country, its language, accents, and culture has been both challenging and rewarding, helping me grow personally and academically.
One of my favourite experiences was participating in Global Week, where I met so many people from diverse backgrounds and celebrated the richness of different cultures. Events like this, along with the welcoming and inclusive environment at NTU, have made my time here memorable and inspiring."
What advice would you give to help new international students get settled in at university?
"I would encourage new international students to get involved as much as possible and embrace every opportunity that comes their way. Volunteer, participate in events, join societies, attend workshops — say “yes” to new experiences. Don’t hesitate to reach out, communicate, and connect with others. The more you engage with the university community, the easier it becomes to settle in, make friends, and feel at home. Getting involved not only helps you build a network but also makes your university experience richer, more rewarding, and full of memorable moments."
