More about Lewis

Why NTU?

Why inspired you to study your subject?

"I was inspired to study Psychology with Counselling because of the help I received with my mental health during the Covid pandemic. Recognising how fortunate I was to have had a support network helping me get back to being myself and fuelled me to learn how to do the same for less fortunate others."

Why did you choose your course and NTU?

"I chose NTU’s course because, unlike other universities, it offered a collaboration of teaching both psychology and counselling. Leading me to become educated on how to better understand human cognition and behaviour in relation to mental health."

What's your experience been like of your course so far?

"Overall, it’s been an unforgettable experience. I have made many excellent relationships with both staff and students, which I believe is largely the result of a mutual value to look out for each other, regardless of familiarity. Personally, the integrative counselling sessions were perhaps my fondest highlight across the two years, as it is when everyone came together most."

Have you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?

"In both my first and second years, I took advantage of the university language programme to re-learn Spanish. At both levels four and five, the teachers were excellent, and the content was engaging. I would highly recommend it to anyone keen on learning a foreign language. Additionally, I took the opportunity to learn piano thanks to the university’s music bursary scheme. Again, a brilliant experience that in my opinion is too good to not apply for."

What does Social Sciences mean to you?

"To me, Social Sciences is a community of people who are driven to make sure that everyone feels heard. Irrespective of the subject, the goal is to become educated in how to better the lives of others using an empathetic approach."

Support

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"I think that the support available at NTU is excellent. Over the two years, my academic tutors have always been available to provide both educational and emotional support, regardless of their personal demands. The lecturers make time at the end of sessions to consolidate any confusion or concerns with the students. And the employability team proactively offers guidance to students regarding all professional enquiries."

Outside of the Lecture Theatre

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

"I was very fortunate to make some great friends early on whilst studying at NTU. Being on the counselling course meant that there were plenty of facilitated exercises for us to get to know one another better, which was naturally aided by having a mutual desire to help others. Generally, I’d say that the friends you make within the social sciences community are more likely to be genuine."

The Next Steps

What's next for you after NTU?

"Being on the sandwich course, I have secured a placement in Barcelona to work as an English language assistant!"

How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?

"100%. For example, during the process of securing my placement, I was able to arrange a mock interview with the employability team to identify where to adapt prior to the real thing. Also, throughout the academic year, you receive plenty of verbal and written feedback from academics, assuring you of your professional strengths as well as areas to develop."

Advice

What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?

"Take the plunge! This course will facilitate your growth as an academic and an individual like no other. Unlike other subjects, everything you are taught can arguably be utilised outside the classroom. So, come the end of your degree, whether you still desire to work in this field or not, you will be equipped with surplus skills applicable to any role. Do not give this one a miss!"
