More about Makeda

Why NTU?

What inspired you to study your subject?

"When I moved overseas, I discovered there was a great demand for teachers all around the world. This realisation motivated me to earn a teaching degree so I could travel again and teach.

I also have many younger children in my family, and it makes me glad to watch them excel and love learning!"

What’s your experience been like of your course so far?

"It has been fantastic so far. I absolutely appreciate this course and have met some wonderful individuals. Everyone on the course and the lecturers have been so supportive."

What does Social Sciences mean to you?

"Helping people to be the best version of themselves. The world is y(ours)!"

On Placement

Have you completed any work placements on your course?

"Yes, I have done two placements so far and they both were inspiring. One inclusive school and one mentorship programme. I enjoyed seeing the children try their hardest and achieve their best potential, even if they have been told they cannot do something before."

Do you have any memorable moments from your placement?

"The kids thanking me and being grateful for my support and help."

Support

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"Support has been good. All my tutors have been so kind."

Outside of the Lecture Theatre

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

"Yes, campus life has been smooth sailing. Very relaxed and chilled and I love that."

DJing

"I've always had a passion for music, I took the plunge in 2014 and chanced applying to volunteer for a local radio station in Nottingham called Kemet FM. The radio station is backed by a charity that also engages with hard-to-reach young people in Nottingham.

I started on a Saturday show, with a co-host who helped me learn everything about presenting and ended up working alongside him until around 2020 when I got my own slot on a Friday 1-4 pm.

The radio station is amazing, they are like my family! So supportive and always doing many things in the community."

The Next Steps

What’s next for you after NTU?

"Hopefully, I can venture abroad to teach or stay here in UK, still in two minds!"

Advice
