The BWB Bursary – Civil Engineering courses

To be eligible to apply applicants must:

• have been offered a place on BSc Civil Engineering – H201 (full time)/H202 (sandwich) or BEng Civil Engineering H203 (full time)/H200 (sandwich), starting in September 2024

Preference may be given to applicants with a household income of less than £25,000 per annum* and who are from a socially or economically disadvantaged background or an area of low participation in HE - as defined by Office for Students POLAR data - based on home address.

Please note that we rely on information provided by Student Finance England to assess household income. Please ensure you have registered with Student Finance England and provided all income assessed evidence, a minimum of 6 weeks before the scholarship deadline.

1. To be eligible to apply for the BWB Bursary, applicants must:

2. Please do not send your scholarship application before, or with, your application to study at NTU. You must have received an offer of a place on an eligible course and been allocated an NTU ID number before submitting your scholarship application.

3. This scholarship is open to UK and international applicants.

4. Students who receive sponsorship (i.e., some or all of your tuition fees are being paid for) from their employers, government or a funding body are not eligible to apply for this scholarship award.

5. Applicants may only apply for this scholarship once per academic year per offer. The offer of a place must be on an eligible course.

6. Applicants are only eligible to apply for this scholarship if they are due to enrol on the first year of an eligible course in September 2024. NTU cannot consider applications from students who are currently studying at NTU unless progressing onto a new undergraduate course.

7. Applications received after 16:00 BST (4pm) on the deadline date will not be considered.

8. This application form is for eligible undergraduate courses only. Please do not use this form to apply for postgraduate scholarships or research funding.

9. If you have been made an offer to study on an eligible three year full-time or four year sandwich course, one scholarship of £1,500 per year of study, excluding your placement year, is available.

10. The scholarship will be awarded as a cash bursary which will be paid in termly instalments for the duration of your study, excluding your placement year.

11. It is expected that any money received as part of the scholarship will be spent helping to meet the costs of studying at university, and receipts may be requested.

12. Prospective students can apply for more than one named scholarship/award/tuition fee reduction, however you will only be awarded a maximum of one in your first year of study (the highest award that you are eligible for).

13. The scholarship is not transferable and will not be awarded if you choose to withdraw from or defer your placement year, or if you choose to transfer to a different course at NTU. Students may re-apply for the scholarship should it still be available.

14. Changes to course route (FT/SW) on the same course do not impact the scholarship awarded but you must inform the scholarships team by emailing NTU.scholarships@ntu.ac.uk

15. Applicants will be informed whether they have (or have not) been awarded a scholarship (and of the value of the scholarship award) within four weeks of the application deadline date.

16. The scholarship will be awarded when an applicant accepts their scholarship offer, accepts and meets the conditions of their course offer, and is enrolled on the course. If you do not formally accept the scholarship by the given deadline, then NTU reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship and award it to another candidate.

17. Scholarships are competitive and selection is based on the information provided on the scholarship application form. It is, therefore, of great importance that you give your scholarship statements careful thought and preparation, and that you refer to the criteria provided on the application form.

18. If your scholarship application is successful, we may ask you to become a student ambassador, or appear in online and / or printed marketing materials for NTU, such as the Alumni Magazine. For example, providing a student profile, quote, case study and photograph which may be used to promote NTU and NTU’s scholarship schemes and courses. Your name and course will be printed in the annual Donor Report. If you do not wish for us to use your data in this manner, please notify us as soon as possible by emailing NTU.scholarships@ntu.ac.uk.

19. As a recipient of a donor-funded scholarship, you are expected to be involved in the following activities to assist the University in thanking donors for their donation and to demonstrate the impact that donor-funded awards have on students and NTU:

o Writing a thank you letter to your donor which introduces yourself (providing your name and subject of study) and sending it to darscholarships@ntu.ac.uk;

o Writing an end-of-year report which will be shared with your donor to explain the impact that the scholarship has had on your studies and your university life – within the report you will be expected to provide your name and subject of study;

o From time to time, you will be invited to attend other University events to meet and thank donors.

You will receive information and advice about completing all of the above, including the deadline by which you will need to do so after you have enrolled at the university. Please note that failure to provide the requested information and/or engage in these activities may result in a delay to your scholarship payment(s).

20. By accepting the terms of the scholarship/bursary, the recipient consents to feedback from academic supervisors and tutors, and where appropriate, their grades or final degree classification being shared with the donor.

21. In the event that a student who has been awarded a scholarship fails to complete an eligible course, chooses to retake the course, or undertakes another eligible course then the scholarship will not be applied again, regardless of the reason for doing so. Students must re-apply for the scholarship should it still be on offer.

22. In the event that a student who has been awarded a scholarship withdraws from the course or their studies are terminated (by the student or by NTU), they will not be eligible to receive further instalments.

23. If a student suspends their studies, they will not be eligible to receive further instalments. Following a period of suspension and upon resumption of studies, NTU may, at its discretion, review and, where appropriate, reinstate a student’s entitlement to the scholarship or bursary.

24. If a student is required to repeat an academic year of study (either in full or in part), the scholarship will be suspended during the repeat year of study and no payments will be made.

25. Students are obliged to inform NTU immediately of any changes to their circumstances which may affect their entitlement to receive the scholarship. In the event of failure by a student to notify NTU promptly of any such changes, NTU will be entitled to recover any payments made or adjust (as appropriate) the scholarship amount.

26. If a student makes a false or materially incorrect declaration that results in NTU awarding them a scholarship/bursary, then the scholarship will be cancelled, and no further payments will be made. Depending on circumstance, NTU may attempt to recover some or all of any payments already made.

27. If NTU makes a payment which was not expected (i.e., was not in the scholarship payment schedule provided to the awardee at the start of the academic year), the student must let NTU know as soon as they are aware that this has happened. NTU will be entitled to recover any payments made in error.

28. NTU’s decision in all matters relating to the scholarship is final.
