Surrounded by water, woodlands, and elegant gardens, Brackenhurst is a university experience with a difference. For our passionate community of ARES staff and students, it’s the perfect learning space – we’ve fused rural charm with a global, forward-thinking edge, to break new ground in the study of animals, agriculture, and the environment.

What’s on offer - buildings, facilities, and resources

Mother Nature meets world class research facilities – at Brackenhurst, you’ll take your education beyond the classroom. We’re committed to providing a hands-on learning experience, which brings theory and practice together. Whether you’re studying animals, agriculture or the environment, it’s all on your doorstep – you’ll put your skills to the test, and learn by doing.

Mary King Riding Arena and Equestrian Centre – These indoor and outdoor arenas host regular dressage and show jumping events, as well as our student-led competitions. Whether it’s equine research or riding lessons, the Centre’s become a firm favourite with our students.

Veterinary Nursing Centre – In this cutting-edge facility, you’ll be supported by qualified veterinary staff. Accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, this purpose-built practice gives you valuable hands-on experience, prior to your placement.

Animal Unit – With 61 species, specialist research equipment, and cutting-edge teaching rooms, there’s no better place to study animal behaviours. You’ll find everything here – from dogs and cats, to snakes and spiders. Develop your handling skills and practical experience, in one of the UK’s preeminent facilities.

The Glasshouse – Featuring the latest technology in production horticulture, our climate-controlled glasshouses can be tailored to a wide range of plants and crops. With adjoining teaching areas, the glasshouses are widely used for growth trials and research projects.

Laboratories – Our Food, Chemistry, Microbiology and General laboratories will give you the tools and space to conduct your own industry-leading research.

Green in looks, green in spirit

As one of the UK’s most environmentally friendly universities, Brackenhurst is the crown jewel in NTU’s commitment to sustainability. From ground-breaking conservation research to our Eco Library, we’re continually improving the quality of your learning, and the quality of our world.

Brackenhurst is also a working farm. The animals are the noisiest things on Campus – over 600 of them live here, and they’re not shy. From ducks to donkeys, they’re the stars of the show, and a valued part of our ARES community.

Live and learn in comfort

City living, or the country life? Some of our ARES students opt for the bright lights of Nottingham – but a large number choose to stay on campus, here at Brackenhurst.

If that’s your preference, you won’t be disappointed. As part of NTU’s £350m investment in your living and learning, the accommodation here is a proper home away from home. It’s secure, modern, and comfortable, with unbeatable views – who needs smoke and chimneys, when you can wake up to 500 acres of glorious countryside?

Visit our accommodation pages to take a look at what’s on offer.

The ARES community is a real one-off – at Brackenhurst, everyone knows everyone else. Run by our Students’ Union, the Brack Bar is the heartbeat of Campus. It’s fun, it’s cheap, and it breaks the mould of other universities – just like Brackenhurst itself. It’s become a famed meeting point across the years – vibrant but relaxed, and with a wide range of themed nights, it’ll soon be the centre of your world!

NTU has the best amenities of any university. The rooms are a really good size and they are also convenient for all the amenities on Campus.

We're growing more than plants – expanding Brackenhurst into the future

We don’t stand still. To make the most of its rugged good looks, we’re developing Brackenhurst’s potential as a visitor attraction. We’re planning a restoration of the Grade II-listed Brackenhurst Hall, a museum, and a new café. We’ll also be developing our equine and canine facilities, adding more research spaces, and introducing a tropical butterfly house. We’re committed to making the most of Brackenhurst’s natural beauty, without compromising what makes it special – the peace, quiet and charm of a one-off learning environment.

The best of both worlds

Brackenhurst’s bottom line is peace and quiet – but only when you want it. Served by regular buses, the Campus is less than 30 minutes away from Nottingham. And nearer to home, Southwell is on your doorstep – this affluent market town is renowned for its stylish range of pubs, bars, delis, and boutique restaurants.

Whatever your tastes, a big night out is never far away.
