Seven Fashion Communication and Promotion (FCP) students were invited to respond to a creative brief and attend a workshop; all set to coincide with the homecoming launch of Sir Paul Smith’s “Hello, My Name is Paul Smith” exhibition.

The design brief set required students to design a bag or packaging inspired by Paul’s iconic designs for the new Nottingham Castle shop and to then present the idea, as well as being shown around the exhibition by Paul himself.

Sarah Lewington, Senior Lecturer on the Fashion Communication and Promotion course at NTU, said: “The students had the opportunity to show Paul their responses to the brief and get feedback from him. It was a fantastic day and the students made me extremely proud, they produced some great work in a very short space of time and were really professional.”

Ted Cantle CBE, Chair of the Nottingham Castle Trust board (which is a Strategic Partner of NTU), said of the opportunity: “Being able to give Nottingham students and young people the chance to experience world-class exhibitions in a unique way and providing access to inspirational and iconic Nottingham voices is what we are all about – it’s been a day that makes you proud to be associated with the city.”

Not only did the students receive excellent feedback, but Paul Smith has invited them to visit his studios in London and onward opportunities, such as work experience, are also being discussed.

The “Hello, My Name is Paul Smith” exhibition takes a look at the long-spanning career of Paul Smith, from his humble beginnings on Byard Lane, Nottingham, to being the international design icon he is today. The exhibition features over 1,500 objects, focussing on key themes and objects that have laid the foundations to Paul’s success, offering a unique insight into his magnificent mind.

The exhibition opened at the Castle in June this year and will remain on display until 20 February 2022. Book here.
