Spiderman: Into the spider-verse

Animation students recently had the chance to attend a special workshop with Jabari Cofer, who is Animation Lead at Sony Pictures Imageworks. Jabari spoke to students about setting out in the features industry as a non-binary person of colour. They shared their tips and recommendations for reels and interviews, and spoke about their animating workflow, cutting corners.

Jabari has enjoyed an extensive career and worked as an animator on some of the best films over the past 10 years, a few examples include Spiderman: Into the spider-verse, Smurfs and Hotel Transylvania 3. Providing students with an insightful overview of the animation industry.

We caught up with BA (Hons) Animation student Orla Mcilfatrick about how they found the experience “I was excited about the lecture after hearing that Jabari was nonbinary, as a nonbinary person myself it meant a lot to see myself represented and to hear about their success within the industry. Jabari talked about their experiences of using they/them pronouns, but also told us about their time working on a previous films, where they had to put up a bit of a fight to have the smallest amount of queer representation for the main character. Not only was Jabari non-binary but also a person of colour, a representation I would love to see more often”.
