The Project

Izumi is a lamp designed to promote wellness at home by encouraging users to disengage from daily activities through interaction. This interactive lamp allows users to create personalized designs by customizing the central base with sliding wooden pieces. This puzzle-like activity not only provides a moment of mindful engagement but also offers light therapy benefits.

The Inspiration Behind the Project

Izumi was created to offer an unconventional lighting system for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Moving away from the clinical designs currently available, the research focused on integrating an interactive approach. Izumi blends Japanese woodworking and joinery techniques with the fundamental forms of the Bauhaus movement, ensuring both accessible manufacturing and visual appeal.

Being Part of NTU

Estefania's time at Nottingham Trent University was a valuable back-to-basics experience. After 15 years in the design industry, the master's program allowed her to delve into a more detailed area of design, with a strong emphasis on research and user-centric solutions. She greatly benefited from the guidance of tutors and technicians at NTU and is grateful for the enriching experience.

Closing Remarks

Estefania looks forward to re-entering the workforce with a refreshed perspective and new ideas centered on human-focused design. She aims to further develop Izumi, maximizing its potential benefits for well-being and mental health.
