The unanimous choice of the judges of this year's Design Truth Student Awards, Zaki Razak took the top prize for his innovative design Structra, which was also his self-directed project in the final year of his Product Design degree. He wins £1500 plus a paid internship with industry design consultancy Morrama.

Structra is a compact, modular trolley designed to streamline the monitoring of patient vital signs which its creator believes could save NHS nurses hours of unnecessary work per month – which could amount to the equivalent of almost £1billion per year across the National Health Service (NHS) England.

Inspired by his own experience having being admitted to hospital for a severe allergic reaction, Zaki, 23, saw first-hand how hospital staff were working with outdated systems to record a patient's heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels and temperature.  His solution was to combines a vital sign monitor (VSM) trolley with a point of care testing (POCT) trolley, doing away with the need for cumbersome laptops and personal smartphones. Designed through user feedback, the device has multiple efficiency-enhancing features which, according to Zaki's research, based on interviews with half a dozen nurses, could save each nurse 11 hours per month.

Structra was one of the many designs exhibited at the recent end-of-year Student Showcase where it generated a lot of interest - and now it has been further recognised by the Design Truth awards, marking an incredible year for Zaki,

In a post on their LinkedIn page, the Design Truth team posted a video of the moment they told Zaki the good news on a Zoom call alongside the following message: "You should be incredibly proud of your achievement and we look forward to seeing a blossoming design career."

Zaki will get to celebrate his success in person at the upcoming Student Awards celebration event being held in London on 11 July.
