The Project
BArch (Hons) Architecture student Luiza Ellor has designed a creative centre located at Newark Castle aimed at encouraging the local community tio embrace creativity through dance and theatre. In her own words:
"My design embraces the heritage of Newark castle by being an insertion which contributes to the already existing context. The intentional spaces enable freedom. It promotes observation and immersivity, like you are 'dancing with the castle' by going through, in and out of it. My shapes and spaces have been curated through a forensic investigation of the castle façade alongside the inspiration behind my chosen song by Celia Regina called 'Ternura Antiga'."
She adds: "Overall, my project is a journey, a messy but organised experience- just like music. The concept of this project is seen throughout and plays a vital part for it's design and development- the images shown are all part of my conceptual process."

The inspiration behind the project
Luiza says the most important step beginning this project was allowing herself to be as creative as possible. "It is through this that I began searching for ways of representing my ideas in a more engaging way. Inspiration was found through my song of choice, investigating the castle (in person and through drawings) and finding people who inspire me."
One such person is Bea Martin, the architect, writer and educator who lectures at Manchester School of Architecture and whom Luiza was fortunate enough to hear at one of NTU's "Trent Talks" lecture series.
The project experience
Luiza describes working on her final year project as being "a fun and exciting experience". She says: "I have enjoyed every moment of working on this project as it’s allowed me great freedom with my design ideas and executions."

Being part of NTU
Reflecting on her time at Nottingham Trent University (NTU), Luiza says that, aside from developing numerous skills (including model making and using design software), she has also developed confidence in communicating her ideas in presentations and review days.
She adds: "Working hard on something and being recognised for my efforts is a very gratifying feeling which everyone gets to experience when they participate in the course."
Closing remarks
Asked to provide some words of advice for potential future students of Architecture at NTU, Luiza simply offers the following: "Do what you love and the rest will follow."
