The event brought together students, alumni and industry professionals for an evening of networking, career development and inspiring conversations. Featuring a keynote address from NTU Product Design graduate and entrepreneur Nicole Crentsil, alongside a panel of successful alumni working across construction, engineering, consultancy and property, the event explored how meaningful connections can help unlock career opportunities and drive professional growth.
Nicole, founder and CEO of Black Girl Fest Studios and recently appointed ADBE Honorary Visiting Fellow, shared her journey from NTU student to cultural strategist, investor and business leader. Reflecting on her career, she encouraged students to recognise and develop their transferable skills:
"You don't need to be the best at every element. You need to hone in on the skills that will open doors for you in the future."
Drawing on experiences ranging from launching creative projects to securing partnerships with global brands, Nicole highlighted the importance of taking initiative, building relationships and creating opportunities rather than waiting for them.
She also challenged students to be proactive in expanding their networks:
"You never know what might be on the other side of sending that email. So send it."
The keynote emphasised several practical networking principles, including leading with curiosity, following up on conversations, staying in touch with contacts and offering value before asking for support.
A panel discussion featuring Mary Sutherland-James (WSP), Daniel Aiyegoro (National Grid), Nono Mujaranji (Deloitte) and Gracia Anyiam‑Osigwe (Bloom and Build Collective) explored how networking had influenced each of their career journeys.
Panellists spoke openly about overcoming imposter syndrome, building confidence and making effective use of professional platforms such as LinkedIn. Students were encouraged to embrace opportunities, start conversations and believe in their own value.
One of the strongest messages came from Gracia Anyiam‑Osigwe, who reminded attendees:
"If you're in the room, then you deserve to be in the room."
The panel also highlighted the importance of visibility and personal branding, encouraging students to share their projects, learning and achievements online as a way of demonstrating their interests and expertise.
Throughout the evening, key themes included:
- Building confidence through practice and experience.
- The importance of mentoring and professional support networks.
- Making the most of LinkedIn and digital networking opportunities.
- Turning conversations into long-term professional relationships.
- Challenging imposter syndrome and recognising personal value.
- Creating opportunities through curiosity, initiative and persistence.
Students also learned about a range of development opportunities available through ADBE, including the Black Leadership Programme, the Fortitude Global Development Programme, the ADBE Industry Mentoring Programme and the upcoming NTU Built Environment Careers Fair.
The event concluded with an informal networking session, giving students the opportunity to connect directly with alumni, employers and fellow students, putting the evening's networking advice into practice immediately.
Chris Jones, School Employability Manager, commented:
“Once again, we have been extremely fortunate to benefit from the wisdom and experience of our fantastic alumni community. We had a really inspiring panel, and it was great to hear from voices often under-represented in the industry sharing their strategies and successes. There was a real buzz in the room during the networking session as our students took the opportunity to connect and build their networks.”
By bringing together current students, graduates and industry leaders, the Power of Networking event reinforced the value of professional relationships and demonstrated how connections made today can shape future careers.
The event formed part of ADBE’s Professional by Design initiative, helping students develop the professional accreditation, development, behaviours and experience they need to help them become successful future professionals.
