Sustainability in Design: Main Hall

The refurbishment of Main Hall at Brackenhurst represents Nottingham Trent University's commitment to preserving and enhancing historic buildings, embracing sustainability and improving facilities for colleagues across our estate.

Over the past 5 years, refurbishment of the Grade II listed Main Hall at Brackenhurst has enabled external and internal repairs to improve the weathertightness of the building and services within. The newly refurbished facility now offers high-quality working spaces with improved heating, lighting, safety aspects, and end-user comfort. Historic features have been reinstated, preserving the building's heritage while enhancing its functionality. This refurbishment not only safeguards the building's future but also provides a more comfortable and efficient environment for colleagues.

Sustainability in Design

The works to Main Hall effectively demonstrated NTU’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility across our estate. By carrying out extensive roofing and window repairs, we have ensured the building is watertight, reducing the need for frequent maintenance and conserving resources.

The removal of asbestos from the existing plant rooms was meticulously managed to safeguard the Great Crested Newt population on campus. Additionally, the installation of a new fire egress staircase mitigated the human risks associated with the previous external staircase. These efforts underscore our commitment to both biodiversity and safety.

The project saw complete renewal of electrical and mechanical installations within the building, improving energy efficiency through the choice of materials and control systems installed. This approach not only enhances user comfort but also reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The installation of efficient lighting systems and water-saving fixtures further reflects our commitment to sustainable practices.

Concept to completion

The Main Hall project began with external repairs in 2021. Internal works commenced in 2023 and were completed by August 2024. Throughout the construction phase, continuous and effective stakeholder consultation ensured the project's success, fostering collaboration and transparency.

NTU's Sustainability Team, colleagues from the School of Animal Rural and Environmental Sciences, Digital Technologies, NTU Estates and Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Conservation Officer ensured the project was future-proof for both our campus and community. External partners including Evans Vettori Architects and Curtins Structural Engineers,  brought their expertise in historic buildings to ensure the success of the works.

Impact of the project

The refurbishment of the Main Hall Brackenhurst was delivered entirely by organisations based in the immediate East Midlands region, supporting local investment and capabilities. The project aligns with NTU's themes of Creating Opportunity, Valuing Ideas, and Connecting Globally, aiming to be the most welcoming environment for staff from every community.

By enhancing the historic building, NTU can further personalise the working experience for colleagues, bringing it in line with modern standards. The Main Hall Brackenhurst project embodies NTU's commitment to sustainability, innovation, and excellence in preserving heritage, setting a benchmark for future projects and reinforcing our position as a leader in sustainable design.
