What you’ll study

On this course you’ll explore industry-standard tools like Adobe InDesign and Photoshop and engage in practical exercises to develop your design skills, creating content for both print and digital media.

You’ll learn how to maintain a cohesive visual identity across diverse platforms and explore the digital landscape including social media design and AI integration.

The course will show you graphic design principles, branding techniques, and essential Adobe tools so you can create professional-looking designs for marketing.

On this course, you will:

  • Overview of branding and visual communication.
  • Introduction to typography and typographic rules.
  • Creation of grids and style sheets in InDesign.
  • Sourcing of and editing of images in Photoshop.
  • Designing print materials, brochures, posters and flyers.
  • Designing online visual communications such as banners.
  • Understanding dimensions and resolutions.
  • An overview of dynamic branding.
  • Creating a brand toolkit (font, colour palette, brand assets).
  • Overview of IP in design and understand data permissions.
  • Harnessing AI tools for design.

  • Designing a concertina and a social media template.

Further information on what you'll study

By the end of the course you will have a robust understanding of graphic design principles.

You’ll have developed your proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop and built skills in crafting compelling social media content.

You’ll also leave with strategies for maintaining visual consistency in print and digital media, and assets for your portfolio.

How you’re taught

Through practical projects you’ll develop your skills in the software and use a range of tools and techniques to create graphics ready for print or to use online.

This course will be delivered in person on Nottingham Trent University city campus.

Tutor profile:

Jason Holroyd is an award-winning graphic designer, art director and illustrator.

Jason graduated from NTU with a degree in graphic design and has over 15 years industry experience, working with clients and agencies such as 4 Creative, Arts Council England and Warner Brothers Records.

He has been teaching for over 12 years and is currently an associate lecturer on the NTU graphic design degree course.

Campus and facilities

You will be based in the Nottingham School of Art and Design on the City Campus.

You’ll work in our spacious IT suites equipped with industry standard software including Adobe Creative Cloud.

You will receive an email one week before the course starts with joining instructions on where to go for the first day.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Entry requirements

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to elevate their design and marketing skills whether you’re working in-house for a marketing or communications team, self-employed or involved in a start-up company.

Level: Beginner/intermediate

Entry requirement: No software experience is required, although you must have basic computer skills and be familiar with Windows operating systems and file management.

You must be over the age of 18 in order to attend this course.
