Introduction:

This course gives you an introduction to television presenting, ideal for anyone with an interest in journalism and media.

You’ll experience studio and on-location presenting, as well as basic voice training and performance coaching, to ensure you to feel relaxed and confident in the role of a presenter.

You’ll also be given tuition on scriptwriting for bulletins and experience a multi-camera studio environment.

  • You’ll be part of a design community in our creative studio culture; one that promotes discussion and collaboration, and encourages experimentation and the constant swapping of ideas.
  • With a limited class size you'll have the one-to-one attention you need to ensure you leave with the skills to continue developing your portfolio.
  • Benefit from learning with an experienced tutor who has established links to the profession and significant experience working in varied practices.
  • On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance.

What you’ll study

This course is ideal if you’re considering a career as a presenter, broadcaster or journalist and would like to gain a deeper understanding of how to stand out at auditions and screen tests.

You’ll receive one-to-one feedback from the tutor on your presentation style and technique.

  • develop your voice for storytelling
  • read from an autocue
  • critique industry structures and practices
  • plan, design and execute research in a range of presenting contexts
  • communicate effectively and appropriately and improve your confidence!

You’ll study in NTU’s Centre for Broadcast and Journalism, an award-winning education resource that provides practical training in news journalism across print, digital, radio and television.

Further information on what you'll study

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to confidently communicate in front of the camera and have a portfolio of writing and reporting scripts.

Social events

We appoint NTU Student Ambassadors who host social events on Monday and Wednesday evening to help you make friends across the whole of our summer school programme for 15 – 17 year olds, which are free to attend.

How you’re taught

This course will be delivered in person on Nottingham Trent University city campus.

You will receive 25 contact hours of quality tuition with an experienced tutor.

Tutor Profile: Gail Mellors

Gail Mellors is the Course Leader of the BA (Hons) Broadcast Journalism degree at Nottingham Trent University.

Gail teaches Broadcast and Convergence Journalism; runs multiplatform news days; and is a supervisor for undergraduate multiplatform projects.

Gail started her career in newspapers working on both regional and national titles as a reporter, crime correspondent and news editor.

She then moved into broadcasting working for ITV Yorkshire’s regional evening news programme Calendar for 13 years whilst also working on numerous secondments for Daybreak and ITN.

During her career Gail has been an on-screen reporter, a presenter and a programme producer as well as producing a number of documentaries for regional and network audiences.

Gail continues to appear on TV as a freelance reporter / presenter for ITV Central.

The course is designed to give you a real experience of university life, make new friends who share similar interests and develop your portfolio so that ultimately, you can make an informed decision about your future.

On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance, which will further enhance your CV.

Campus and facilities

You will be studying in the Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism, as part of the School of Arts and Humanities on the City Campus.

You will find modern teaching spaces and group study environments to develop your ideas and skills as a journalist.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Entry requirement: You should have an interest in developing your personal approach to presenting and TV.

You must be 15, 16 or 17 years old at the time of the course in order to attend.

The fee for this course is £525.

Payment is due at the time of booking.

Secure your place with a deposit - If you're booking more than two months before the course starts, we can accept a £200 deposit to secure your place, and the balance is due one month before the course starts.

Your course fees cover the cost of studies and include great benefits such as the use of our modern library and free use of the IT equipment and software on the campus during your course.

Guests will be provided with a mobile number for the supervisor(s) during their stay.
