Introduction:

Primary and Secondary Teacher Training in partnership with Inspiring Leaders Teacher Training

Inspiring Leaders Teacher Training (ILTT) are a School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme who work in partnership with Nottingham Institute of Education, at Nottingham Trent University. Together we have developed an exciting and innovative new course for potential trainee teachers.

ILTT currently work with four school partner trusts to provide the training and knowledge you need to become an outstanding teacher which will enable you to deliver an outstanding education to children:

  • Discovery Trust (Primary) covering Leicester City, Leicestershire and Rutland
  • Redhill Teacher Training (Secondary) covering Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire
  • Flying High Futures (Primary) covering Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire
  • Transform Trust (Primary) covering Nottingham City and Derby City

Full details of the Inspiring Leaders SCITT can be found here: www.inspiringleadersscitt.com/partners/

You can choose to specialise in General Primary (5-11 years), Early Years Foundation Stage (3-7 years) or Secondary (11-16 years).

All courses offer you the opportunity to undertake Masters level study, assessment and accreditation whilst being predominantly based in the classroom. ILTT work with Nottingham Trent University to deliver your teacher training. The course includes a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) qualification and 60 Masters level credits which you could use to achieve an MA in Education after you graduate.

Learning is designed to draw upon and extend the training you receive in school. You can access materials and continually develop your understanding of practice throughout the year, not just for the days that you are at the University.

Nottingham Trent University is responsible for delivering and accrediting your Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). We work closely with ILTT to ensure you are being provided with the best possible training and that your academic study can be transferred into your own classroom practice.

As a member of the University, you will also be entitled to access all of our resources, such as the library, student support, employability team and Student’s Union. We will provide you with an induction to the University and our services at the start of the course.

In addition, we support you by providing input on academic research and writing to help with completing an assignment at the end of each module.

Our school based training allows you to be immersed in all aspects of school life from the moment you arrive on the course. You will be introduced to your host school before meeting the children, allowing you time to build positive and important relationships with key members of staff who will support you throughout your teacher training year.

From the moment you enter school on the first day you will be treated as a member of the staffing team, allowing you to build strong relationships with those in your class and around school. Through the support offered from your Class Mentor and Learning Coach, you will gradually take on additional responsibilities and be given more freedom to explore and apply your creativity.

As you become more confident and independent in your teaching you will begin to experience the gratification and the joy that comes from children learning what you have taught them.

Our taught programme will leave you inspired by some of the most passionate, expert teachers in our partnership of schools. The majority of our facilitators are Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs), who are teachers and leaders who have been recognised by the Government for their expertise and specialist knowledge and are also currently practising in the classroom on a daily basis. Being taught by current practitioners will allow you to learn from those who can give you the most up-to-date information and strategies in teaching and learning.

We pride ourselves in providing trainees with the opportunity to learn from, and be enthused by some of the most exceptional professionals in their fields.

All of our trainees will spend some time independently researching and studying current and relevant research to support their teaching practice, just like a fully qualified teacher. We are seeking applicants who are naturally curious and who seek to constantly improve their performance through personal research and study.

How you’re taught

Throughout the year you will be given the opportunity to learn and develop through a blend of experiences, including residentials and alternative placements, all of which support you towards your goal of becoming a teacher.

Trainees will examine current theory, with each module containing teaching, assessment and independent work, all of which are directly relevant to the classroom. School placements will ensure the knowledge and skills acquired during the ILTT and University based training are strongly anchored in practice. The intended outcome for the programme is that every trainee has the opportunity to complete the course with a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

  • GCSE English, Mathematics and Science at minimum grade C or equivalent. Applicants with pending qualifications will be considered.
  • an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, and any other safeguarding checks that may be necessary

It may strengthen your application to have had some experience in a classroom in a UK mainstream school, setting or college, although this is not an entry requirement. If you do wish to gain some experience prior to your application, you can find out more about how to arrange this online.

Applicants will need to undertake an interview as part of the selection process.

If necessary, you can take a relevant GCSE as a private candidate. Find out how to do this on the AQA's website.

Secondary route:

You will need:

  • GCSE English and Mathematics at minimum grade C or equivalent. Applicants with pending qualifications will be considered.
  • an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, and any other safeguarding checks that may be necessary

Applicants will need to undertake an interview as part of the selection process.

In exceptional circumstances applicants may be considered who do not have a strong degree match, but who have other relevant qualifications, including an A-level in the subject and extensive professional experience. We do not accept Ordinary degrees. The key consideration is if you are able to demonstrate knowledge of the subject that is commensurate with graduate level understanding.

You will complete a diagnostic assessment of your fundamental English and mathematics skills at interview. This will inform any development that you need to undertake leading up to and during your training. There is no longer a requirement to complete Department for Education Professional Skills Tests.

After interview, strong candidates who are not able to demonstrate graduate level subject knowledge may be offered a place on the course, dependent on successfully completing a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course in that subject prior to commencing their teacher training year.

If necessary, you can take a relevant GCSE as a private candidate.
