Accommodation FAQs

There's a lot to think about when deciding on accommodation, and a lot of questions that may need answering.

Below you will find answers to some of the most common questions that we get asked by prospective students.

General accommodation FAQs

Yes, read our accommodation guarantee for 2025 entry.

Accommodation includes halls of residence that are owned by the University, UPP halls at NTU, or private accommodation providers.

Rooms for September 2025 (NTU / UPP halls at NTU) are available on the booking system.

You can book your accommodation if you are holding a conditional or unconditional offer, and have made NTU your firm choice.

After your acceptance is confirmed, you’ll be asked to set up a password to access our accommodation booking system. Access can take two working days from accepting your offer on UCAS. Then you can see the range of accommodation available, filter your preferences and apply.

Our accommodation guarantee for 2025 entry means that you will have options available if you accept later in the year.

Early bookings are welcome. However, if you’re not ready to accept just yet don’t worry - we guarantee accommodation. This means you’ll still have a range of accommodation options available to apply for even if you make your decision later in the year. Room availability does change over the year, so whenever you are ready to make your decision, you can be confident that we will support you in finding suitable accommodation.

Our open days are the perfect way to view the accommodation and talk to our staff about your options. We’ll have a number of halls open across our campuses for you to view and staff will be on hand to answer any questions and offer advice.

Can’t make an open day?

UPP halls at NTU reception staff always welcome in person viewings during working hours. There may be some restrictions on which rooms you can see, though, as rooms will most likely be inhabited by current students. Please feel free to contact them to enquire on organising a viewing.

You can search and view all our accommodation on our Find accommodation page. We also provide 360 images of some of our residences on our virtual tour and you can see quick tours on Instagram and TikTok.

Our booking system is self-allocated. When you log in with your student ID it will recognise your age and level of study and show you suitable accommodation options. Please note the University holds back certain rooms across our portfolio to ensure we can offer a fully inclusive mix to all students wishing to book accommodation.

You can filter your search in the booking system across a range of facilities and amenities (i.e., en suites, gyms, parking) and locations (i.e., on and off campus).

Can I request an accessible room due to a medical condition / disability?

When you apply online in our accommodation booking system, you will be asked a series of questions about any additional requirements. The Accommodation team will then be in touch with you or your nominated contact to discuss your accommodation options and make you a suitable offer. We would encourage students to be transparent about any requirements, so we can match them with the most suitable accommodation, subject to availability.

You can also call the Accommodation team on +44 (0)115 848 2894 or email us at accommodation@ntu.ac.uk for advice and guidance.

Yes, we can offer a lot of extra support for care experienced or estranged students.

You can read more about the support the University offers via the support for care leavers and estranged students webpage.

No, you can book a room without a deposit.

If you deferred from 2024/25 to 2025/26 entry you are still eligible for accommodation. If you didn't enrol for the 2024/25 year the system should recognise you as a new first year student and allow you to book as normal.

If you deferred your entry later the system may not recognise you as a first year student and you may experience issues logging in. Any issues please email us at accommodation@ntu.ac.uk.

If you have accepted NTU as your insurance choice you will be unable to book accommodation. If NTU becomes your firm choice after you have received your results, you will be able to apply for accommodation once your place is confirmed.

You can only make one booking at any time and system will only allow you to see your active room booking. If you change your mind or want to see if other rooms are available, you’ll have to cancel your room to be able to see other availability. We recommend that you think carefully before cancelling your booking as this will release your booking and we will be unable to reinstate it.

If you’re a new student, the cancellation deadline is 21 days before the start of your contract for all 44 week, 51 week, and Semester contracts. For new students starting in September 2024 the cancellation deadlines are as follows:

  • 23 August 2024 for 44-week contracts and single-semester contracts
  • 18 August 2024 for 51-week contracts.

If you’re a returning student, you have a cooling-off period of 7 days after accepting the Terms and Conditions in which to cancel your booking. There is no 7-day cooling-off period for bookings made in the 21 days before the contract starts.

Another option is to request a room swap through the booking system if your booking is held at ‘Tentative’ or ‘Reserved’. The swap process does not match students against an empty room, it requires matching with a student who is looking to change rooms. Changes are free before tenancy agreements start. If your tenancy agreement has started a small administration fee of £30 will be charged.

View our accommodation policies for more information.

Yes, you can book a room in the same flat as your friends, subject to availability. Your best chance for living with friends is to book your rooms when you’re together, so you can make sure you’re picking rooms in the same flat/residence.

NTU does not currently provide university accommodation for families or couples.

We have parking at our outlying halls only. Permits are arranged through each halls’ site team and cost £250. Our five city centre halls (Byron, Gill Street North, Gill Street South, Sandby, and Hampden) have no parking and the tenancy agreement for these halls states that students will not bring a car to the city.

Yes, you can stay in our halls of residence throughout all of your studies.* It's becoming more and more popular for students to remain in halls for their returning years as they may find the location and facilities are preferable to staying in private accommodation. Learn more about returning to halls.

*Please note, some halls have limited numbers of returner rooms available, so we can't guarantee that every returning student can remain in halls across all sites and all campuses.

Other FAQs

44 weeks is suitable for the majority of students. This allows you to keep the room until the summer without having to vacate over the winter break. We also have 51 week contracts which are aimed at students needing to stay all year round such as those on postgraduate course or international students unable to return home over the summer.

You will pay your accommodation fees in three termly instalments, to coincide with loan payments. Typically, these are in September, January and April.

We recommend you set up the payment plan to secure your booking. You can change your payment details later in the year once your student account has been set up, ahead of your first instalment.

NTU operate several residences including College Drive and Brackenhurst Halls. If you book this accommodation NTU is your landlord. This means your accommodation requirements when in residence will be dealt with by the NTU Accommodation team. Other residences are operated by University Partnerships Programme (UPP) – NTU’s affiliate accommodation partner. When in residence they will be your landlord and will deal with your accommodation requirements.

Full contact details will be provided to you in your accommodation handbook. Accommodation near our Mansfield Hub is managed via a letting agent - the landlord will be stated on your accommodation contract. NTU is the landlord for some Mansfield properties.

All our halls are self-catered. You can buy food from NTU catering outlets on campus.

No, if you're staying in an NTU or UPP hall of residence, you will not need to pay a deposit or provide a guarantor. This is the case for Home and International students at any level of study and for any booking type.
