Our employability initiatives

Our initiatives bring something different to your employability toolkit, whether that’s hearing from professionals and employers about breaking into the job market, or learning new attributes and skills to shout about at interview or include as part of your CV.

Covering a range of different sectors from law, business and STEM to the creative industries and public sector - the Empowering Ethnic Minorities series is an opportunity to learn from ethnic minority professionals and inclusive employers about breaking into a variety of different industries.

This series is designed to empower ethnic minority students to enter the sector by providing relatable industry insights and awareness to increase sector diversity. The events will focus on career journeys, accomplishments and ethnic diversity through panel discussions and networking opportunities.

Focusing on six key areas – resilience, confidence, assertiveness, leadership, self-advocacy and allyship – the Women’s Development Programme is programme created for female, female identifying and non-binary students to improve their skills and attributes before entering the world of work.

As well as building your confidence, the programme will not only provide you with a network, but the opportunity to have a 1:1 mentoring sessions with experienced NTU alumni.

We want all our students to enjoy the same level of success both during and after their studies. Our Rise team was created to enable eligible students to fulfil their potential and have the same opportunities to access valuable industry experience and skills as their peers.

Who is eligible?

Students who meet any of the below criteria can access support from Rise.

  • Postcode - students from postcode areas where progression into higher education is low.
  • Low-income households - students who are entitled to the maximum tuition fee and maintenance loan from student finance, and are in receipt of the NTU Bursary.
  • Disability - students in receipt of Disabled Student’s Allowance (DSA).
  • Care leavers - students who have formerly been in local authority or foster care.
  • University entry qualifications - students who have entered university with BTEC qualifications only.

How Rise can support you

Rise provides a range of tailored opportunities and support to help you develop key employability skills and prepare for your future career. These include:

  • Rise Insight – 1st year work experience - Rise Insight works with local and national businesses to provide insight day experiences to hundreds of students every year.
  • Rise PLAN (Placement Learning Academy NTU) – 2nd year placement search - a structured programme designed for second-year students seeking sandwich placements. It aims to:
    • Boost confidence and resilience
    • Enhance commercial awareness
    • Equip you with the skills needed to succeed in recruitment processes.
  • Disability and inclusion support - dedicated employability support for students with a disability, neurodivergence, or long-term health condition, ensuring equal access to opportunities and tailored career development resources.
  • Rise ambassadors - a paid opportunity for Rise-eligible students to work with the Employability team to enhance and promote support to eligible students.
  • Exclusive events and opportunities - Rise offers events, workshops, and networking opportunities throughout the academic year to connect eligible students with industry professionals, employers, and career development experts.

By engaging with Rise, you can access specialist support designed to enhance your employability, build confidence, and prepare you for the next steps in your career journey.

The Digital Marketing Academy (DMA) is a programme designed to support all NTU students (both undergraduates and postgraduates) and recent graduates to find out more about digital marketing. Throughout the programme, you will learn the secrets of digital marketing from industry experts through interactive workshops. Gain industry-recognised qualifications by completing online accreditations and increase your chances of securing a placement or graduate roles in the digital marketing sector.

The Sales Skills Academy (SSA) is a programme designed to help NTU students (both undergraduates and postgraduates) and recent graduates develop essential skills for success in any career. Through interactive workshops led by industry experts, you'll master the art of engagement and influence. You will also have the opportunity to network with industry professionals and hear about the latest jobs in industry.

Be a positive role model, make a difference to local young people. Our Students in Classrooms programme is an innovative scheme that puts NTU students alongside teachers in primary and secondary schools, academies and colleges.

The programme aims to help raise attainment levels, develop pupil character, and raise awareness about the opportunities that are available post-16 and within higher education.

Make your experience at NTU count and boost your employability with the NTU Award.

This flexible award encompasses all that you do as an NTU student in, and outside of university. Achieve certificates by setting yourself goals, completing activities, and reflecting on your personal development.

The NTU Award is available to you right from enrolment to the day of graduation – simply ‘click and go’. It provides a fully-tailored solution, and where and how you complete the award is entirely up to you.

As well as looking great on your CV, LinkedIn profile or as evidence of your achievements at a job interview, the award will also help you make new connections and gain knowledge and insights about you and your future.
