FAQs and contacting the Finance Office

Here you'll find answers to some frequently asked questions relating to your Finance query.

Student Finance Award

Release of maintenance money

If you are receiving a postgraduate loan from the Student Loans Company, it will not be paid to the University to cover fees.  You will therefore need to set up a payment arrangement for your tuition fees before your postgraduate loan can be paid to you.  (Tuition fee payment dates for postgraduates are scheduled to allow students time to receive their postgraduate loan prior to paying fees).

Please ensure that you also have completed the following:

  • completed online enrolment
  • activated your smart card.

Please note, NTU cannot check pending student finance applications, please contact your relevant student finance body for more information.

If you applied for student finance less than 8 weeks ago, you do not need to take any immediate action, but be aware that it will normally take your national Student Finance Service up to 8 weeks to assess your application for a Tuition Fee Loan (and Maintenance Loan if applicable) and we would urge you to log into your online student finance account and keep checking for updates. While you will not be asked to pay anything towards your fees unless you have exceeded your enrolment deadline without successfully obtaining confirmation of your award from Student Finance Services, you will need to make sure you bring some money with you to cover your living costs until your maintenance loan is paid.

Have you activated your student card? The University is unable to confirm to the Student Loans Company that you are registered and attending NTU until you are fully enrolled and activated your student card. This is required to release your student finance and any maintenance loan you are expecting.

To activate your card there are two steps to complete:

Please note, NTU cannot check pending student finance applications, please contact your relevant student finance body for more information.

Student Loan application

If you are a postgraduate student in receipt of a postgraduate loan, you are responsible for setting up a payment plan to cover your fees in full. Please note that the maximum postgraduate loan may not cover your fees in full.

You will therefore need to set up a payment arrangement for your tuition fees before your postgraduate loan can be paid to you.  (Tuition fee payment dates for postgraduates are scheduled to allow students time to receive their postgraduate loan prior to paying fees).

Please note, NTU cannot check pending student finance applications, please contact your relevant student finance body for more information.

Any students who have been through Clearing after getting exam results still need to make sure that their student finance is sorted. New guidance for any students in England going through Clearing is available on the Student Finance website.

If you've already applied for student finance but your course, university or college has changed through Clearing, you'll need to let Student Finance England know as it could affect what you're entitled to. See this quick video on how to change your application.

Students can make changes to their course, college or university details online prior to their course start date. To make a change log into your Student Finance online account then Your Account > Change your application > University/college course.

Once your loan is confirmed, don’t forget to complete and submit your online declaration from your funding body (or sign and return the paper version, if applicable) or you won’t receive any payments at the start of term!

Please note, NTU cannot check pending student finance applications, please contact your relevant student finance body for more information.

If you are in receipt of a Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) you are required to upload your entitlement letter.

Students who are on UK placement or Overseas placement or study can be paid 25 working days prior to the UK course start date, subject to SLC having a verified NINO and bank details in place. NTU is not required to send registration confirmation for students on placement as students are picked up based on the information they provide on their application.

Please note, NTU cannot check pending student finance applications, please contact your relevant student finance body for more information.
